Backward anaphora in L2 acquisition of English, Mandarin and Japanese
This study reports findings from two experiments on backward anaphora by second language (L2) learners of English, Mandarin, and Japanese, examining the effects of first language (L1) systems and whether a pronoun resolution pattern requiring syntax–discourse integration can be successfully acquired. The findings from Experiment 1 comparing English and Mandarin demonstrate that the availability of positive evidence for Mandarin-speaking learners …
Microvariation in L2 acquisition of backward anaphora
There are crosslinguistic variations for backward anaphora coreference readings although the languages, such as English, Italian, Russian, and Mandarin, that have been experimentally studied are constrained by Principle C. English allows backward anaphora coreference readings between the pronoun and the antecedent NP for sentences like “While he was dancing, Kermit ate the pizza”, but languages like Russian, Mandarin, and Japanese prohibit the co…
The processing of pronominal relative clauses
Relative clauses have played a key role in distinguishing between different theories of language comprehension. A reversal in processing costs between full NP and pronominal relative clauses reported by Reali and Christiansen (2007) has been used to argue for expectation-based theories of comprehension (e.g., Hale, 2001, Levy, 2008), and against memory-based theories of comprehension (e.g., Gibson, 1998, Gibson, 2000, Gordon et al., 2001, Lewis e…
Sequential Interpretation of Pitch Prominence as Contrastive and Syntactic Information
Pitch accent serves multiple duties (encoding lexical accent, syntactic structure, and focus) in spoken Japanese. This study investigates how listeners interpret a role-ambiguous pitch prominence surfacing as F0 rise, which could be a cue to the resolution of a syntactic ambiguity between two possible branching structures, or a signal of contrastive focus on the constituent accompanied by the rise. Two visual world paradigm experiments tested the…

Epenthetic vowels in Japanese
In four cross-linguistic experiments comparing French and Japanese hearers, we found that the phonotactic properties of Japanese (very reduced set of syllable types) induce Japanese listeners to perceive ``illusory'' vowels inside consonant clusters in VCCV stimuli. In Experiments 1 and 2, we used a continuum of stimuli ranging from no vowel (e.g. ebzo) to a full vowel between the consonants (e.g. ebuzo). Japanese, but not French participants, re…
