The volcanic fields of the Coconino Plateau contain several sources of high quality obsidian that were extensively exploited by aboriginal populations. In the 1970s, a brief episode of archaeological research in the San Francisco Volcanic Field constituted the only investigation, until recently, of obsidian sources on the Coconino Plateau.
