  • P2-153 Prenatal stress following maternal bereavement during pregnancy and overweight in the offspring: A cohort study in 109 919 Danish conscripts

Jiong Li, Carsten Obel et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2011

Introduction It has been suggested that prenatal stress contributes to the risk of obesity later in life. In a population-based cohort study, we examined whether prenatal stress related to maternal bereavement during pregnancy was associated with the risk of overweight in the offspring in young adulthood. Methods We conduct a cohort study of 109 919 Danish men who were born in 1986-1990 and presented for conscription in 2006–2009. By linkage of t…

  • What characterises a useful concept of causation in epidemiology

    Jesper Olsen, J Olsen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2003•Cited by: 3•References: 11

It has recently been suggested that epidemiologists should avoid thinking of causes in deterministic terms. This would mean giving up the component-cause model in its original form. A model that has provided important contributions as to how we develop hypotheses, design our study, analyse data, interpret and communicate our results. The component-cause model has considerably more to offer than a simple probabilistic concept. What a causal model …

  • Socioeconomic and work related determinants of pregnancy outcome in southern Thailand

    P Tuntiseranee, Jesper Olsen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1999•Cited by: 3•References: 27

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To examine the effect of socioeconomic status on pregnancy outcome in an urbanised area in a rapidly developing country. METHODS: A cohort of 1797 pregnant women who attended antenatal care clinics at the two 700 bed hospitals in Hatyai city was recruited from September 1994 to November 1995. • Study of environmental, social, and paternal factors in preterm delivery using sibs and half sibs. A population-based study in Denmark

Olga Basso, Jesper Olsen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1999•Cited by: 3•References: 22

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence on preterm delivery of changes in putative genetic and environmental risk factors between two consecutive births. Low social status is a suspected risk indicator of preterm delivery, but the impact of social mobility has not been studied before. PARTICIPANTS: The study uses national cohorts in which women act as their own controls. Subjects were identified by means of registries: 10,4…

  • Options in making use of pregnancy history in planning and analysing studies of reproductive failure

    Jesper Olsen, J Olsen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1994•Cited by: 1•References: 5

BACKGROUND--Although more epidemiological studies of reproductive health have been published recently, important scientific achievements remain few. Among the reasons for this are existing methodological constraints. Fertility is low in most parts of the industralized world, making the observation time short. Pregnancy itself is under extremely close medical surveillance with intensive health care interventions such as prenatal screening, induced…

  • Variability of self reported measures of alcohol consumption: Implications for the association between drinking in pregnancy and birth weight

A da Costa Pereira, Jesper Olsen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1993•Cited by: 3•References: 1

STUDY OBJECTIVE--To describe the intra-subject variability of self reported maternal alcohol consumption using different ways of collecting information and to analyse the implications of this variability for research into the effect of low to moderate maternal alcohol consumption on birth weight. DESIGN--This was a longitudinal study. Self reported maternal alcohol consumption before, during, and after pregnancy was assessed on four occasions ove…

This report is intended to assist the archaeologist in identifying parrot bones from among those of other animals

  • A Note in Regard to Osteological Field Manuals

    Open Access•J Olsen, S J Olsen•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1967•Cited by: 1

This article calls attention to the lack of cooperation among osteologists in sharing with archaeologists their information concerning bone identification by way of field manuals

  • The Relative Value of Fragmentary Mammalian Remains

    Open Access•J Olsen, S J Olsen•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1961•Cited by: 4

The diagnostic value of animal remains from archaeological sites is discussed in the following order of importance of the various osteological elements which can be used for interpreting the fauna they represent: teeth, skull fragments, articular ends of limb bones, foot bones, portions of the pectoral and pelvic girdles, and vertebrae
