John Warwick Montgomery, John Montgomery•ARTICLE•Planning Practice and Research•2003•Cited by: 42•References: 2

Introduction: Cultural Quarters and Urban Regeneration This paper reviews the concept of the cultural quarter as an approach to urban regeneration. It considers the policy objectives of making such designations, the approach to ‘making’ places which are deemed to be more rather than less artistic and cultural in the broader senses of the word, and the methods and mechanisms for implementation and ongoing management. The paper draws heavily on cas…

Pamela Jerome, Michael R Taylor et al.•ARTICLE•Conservation and Management of…•2002

Blackwater Draw Archaeological Site is located in Roosevelt County, New Mexico, and is the type site for the Clovis culture which dates back 12,000 years. In 1995 the stakeholders for Blackwater Draw convened a meeting with an expert consultant to evaluate the efficacy of a protective shelter proposal. The purpose of the proposed shelter was to protect palaeo-Indian finds excavated in 1983–4 and displayed in situ. Recommendations were made and, s…

  • Making a city: Urbanity, vitality and urban design

John Warwick Montgomery, John Montgomery•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban Design•1998•Cited by: 141•References: 4

Following decades of both planned and market-driven decentralization of cities and city-regions, urban policy makers are now extolling the virtues of the compact city. The model which is held up as a good example is that of the traditional European city which is relatively dense and fine-grained. The model that is no longer considered sustainable (economically and socially as well as environmentally) is the sprawl, strip or edge city, more often …

  • The Story of Temple Bar: Creating Dublin's cultural quarter

John Warwick Montgomery, John Montgomery•ARTICLE•Planning Practice and Research•1995

The paper conceptualises and explores the links between cities, commerce, urbanism and cultural planning by drawing on Temple Bar in Dublin as an example of how, by linking these concepts to practice in real concrete situations urban life or urban culture can be created and/or revitalised. Temple Bar is Dublin's emerging cultural quarter, an experiment in urban revitalisation which is deliberately focused on culture and urbanism as ways of redisc…

  • Administration of Occupied Japan: First Year

    John D Montgomery, John Montgomery•ARTICLE•Human Organization•1949

A challenge unique in the history of military government and cultural reform came to the United States when Japan surrendered on September 2, 1945. A nation, virtually intact, was placed, inert, on the international potter's wheel, ready for remolding into democratic and peaceful patterns. A victorious general was to serve as the sculptor: he would first have to design the new model, then shape the deceptively soft ready clay
