  • Dunefield geoarchaeology at White Sands National Monument, New Mexico, USA

Open Access•F Scott Worman, Alexander Kurota et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 2

A recent reconnaissance survey at White Sands National Monument highlighted the importance of understanding the unique geology of the gypsum dunefield in order to interpret the archaeological record. Our geoarchaeological studies, carried out in conjunction with that survey and follow‐up excavations, generated insights into site formation processes, the timing of past occupations, the landscape context of sites, and the resource procurement strat…

  • Shabik'Eschee Village in Chaco Canyon

    Open Access•W H Wills, F Scott Worman et al.•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•2012•Cited by: 15•References: 43

This study revisits an earlier publication in this journal (Wills and Windes 1989) in which a settlement model involving seasonal mobility and limited household autonomy was outlined for Shabik'eschee Village, a Basketmaker III period (ca. A.D. 400-750) site in Chaco Canyon, New Mexico. We return to that work for three reasons. First, the original interpretation has been challenged and an alternative view offered in the form of a large sedentary …

  • Arroyos and Agriculture

    F Scott Worman, H V Mattson•ARTICLE•KIVA•2010•Cited by: 5•References: 9

Archaeologists debate the scale, degree of integration, and level of socio-political complexity of the polity centered on Chaco Canyon. The economic organization of the Chacoan system is fundamental to these debates, yet relatively little research has been directed at investigating agricultural potential, a basic variable. To add to a small but growing body of relevant information, we evaluated the agricultural potential of the Pueblo Pintado Gre…

  • Rural Settlement and Soil Erosion from the Late Roman Period through the Medieval Islamic Period in the Lower Alentejo of Portugal

    James L Boone, F Scott Worman•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•2007•References: 19

This article presents the results of a site survey of Late Roman period and Medieval Islamic period rural settlements in the Lower Alentejo of southern Portugal, and of geoarchaeological investigations that evaluate the role of human activity and environmental change in the pattern of settlement growth, decline, and abandonment documented by the survey. The survey revealed that some time after the dissolution of Roman control of Iberia in the 5th…
