The CHIPS Database
Archaeometallurgists interested in iron do not currently have access to extensive chemical reference data repositories. Yet chemical data is of crucial importance both for reconstructing ancient technical systems and socio-economic structures, by determining the operating conditions and the exchange networks. We are seeking to meet this need with the CHIPS database, developed on PostgreSQL. The goal is to provide the scientific community with glo…

From German Mines to Le Nôtre's Gardens
This article presents the results of an isotopic study of the lead used in the fountains of the gardens at the palaces of Versailles and Vaux‐le‐Vicomte—two iconic examples of French formal gardens designed by André Le Nôtre. The construction of these monumental gardens in the 17th century required considerable quantities of lead, a material not found in the subsoil of the Paris region and therefore necessarily imported. Lead Isotope analysis of …

Continuity of lead-silver production in the area of Cartagena-La Unión (Spain) after the Phoenician trade crisis of the 6th century BC
The cupellation processes remain unchanged from the 8th to the 3rd century BCE in the Alicante region. • Lead isotope analysis shows that the mines of Cartagena were exploited after the crisis in Phoenician trade. • The exploitation of lead-silver suffered a recession, but the exploitation of the mines did not cease completely. The 6th century BCE is marked by major changes in the Mediterranean trade routes. These changes had a significant impact…
Testing Web Mapping and Active Learning to Approach Lidar Data
After acquiring 91 km 2 of lidar data from the Zacapu region, West Mexico, we confronted a series of issues that most archaeologists using this technology face. These include the large volume of data available, the limited training of potential “analysts,” the difficult development of a collective mapping tool and protocol, and the reliability of desk-based interpretation of archaeological features. In this article, we present an initiative condu…
Using digital techniques to document prehistoric rock art
Les restes culinaires de Cuccuru is Arrius (Oristano, Sardaigne)
Although considered a real crossroads on the route of the first waves of migration of Neolithic societies, until now Sardinia has delivered very little data about these colonisation processes. Situated in the Gulf of Oristano, on the western coast of the island, the Middle Neolithic locus of the site of Cuccuru is Arrius thus constitutes a precious archaeological record for a better understanding of settlement modes in the Thyrrenian Islands. Thi…
Obsidian represents one of the best markers for exchanges between prehistoric communities. In the Western Mediterranean, Corsica has a particular situation: although more than 100 km from the nearest obsidian source, the island received important quantities of obsidian, especially during the 4th millennium BC. Indeed, for that period, there were thousands of these obsidian items, which represent more than 75% of the lithic artefacts of each assem…
The aim of this paper is to evaluate the available factors of the transformation of lithic production during the Mesolithic in north-west Europe on the basis of examples from Brittany and Ireland, at the turn of the 7th millennium cal. BC. Changes in lithic productions in these two areas -concerning all stages of the "chaîne opératoire”, i. e. techniques, methods and end products - are so important that it is possible to speak about a before and …
Microlith to macrolith
In a new study the authors explore the reasons behind the remarkable change in the procurement and choice of stone tools that occurred half way through the Irish Mesolithic. The abandonment of microliths and the adoption of a broad blade technology around 7000 BC is here attributed to a need for multi-purpose tools made from a variety of materials, serving smaller and more mobile communities
Research has greatly extended our knowledge of the Mesolithic of the Tyrrhenian Islands these last five years, in particular the excavation of five new sites in Corsica and Sardinia. The growing evidence, notably concerning environment, enables us today to propose new explanations on the modalities of occupation in these islands and way of life of the populations. From these studies, we know that Mesolithic communities settled in these islands, m…
In Corsica, where flint and obsidian are absent, rhyolites were often exploited by prehistoric societies, in particular during the third millennium, when they abound on most archaeological sites. This article aims to discuss exploitation methods of rhyolites in Corsica, using archaeological results from the Monte d'Oro veins (Vivario) and from the analysis of the principal sites known from the third millennium. These results suggest that the supp…
The rock shelter of Strette, located on Corsica's north coast, is one of the best documented Early Neolithic sites on the island. The aim of this article is to examine the different modes of occupation of this shelter in order to evaluate its position in the logistic system of Corsica's Early Neolithic communities. Study of the ceramic, lithic and faunal remains provides details on the activities which took place in this shelter and allows us to …
