  • Dis(abling) conceptions of disability sport: An analysis of institutional change in the Paralympic movement through the lens of boundary and practice work

Simon Gérard, Ian Brittain et al.•ARTICLE•Business History•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 39

Using unique archival evidence on the evolution of the Paralympic movement from the mid-1940s to 1989, this paper advances our understanding of how new organisational forms emerge. Our historical narrative identifies a shift from the Games born out of a medically based and rehabilitative cultural ethos to a sport-performance centred, corporate model embodied in the establishment of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) in 1989. We show how…

  • The Experiences of Women Leaders in the Higher Education Sport Sector: Examining the Gendered Organization Through Bourdieu’s Model of Field, Capital and Habitus

Shamira Naidu-Young, Anthony May et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Sport Journal•2024•References: 16

This article is the first to examine experiences of women with leadership roles in the U.K. Higher Education sport sector. We carried out detailed interviews with women leaders. We utilized Bourdieu’s model of habitus, capital, and field; Acker’s concept of “gendered organizations;” and Shilling’s concept of physical capital. Our findings show Higher Education operates more inclusively than the wider sport sector, which has the potential to advan…

  • Leveraging accessible tourism development through mega-events, and the disability-attitude gap

    Open Access•Michael B Duignan, Ian Brittain et al.•ARTICLE•Tourism Management•2023•Cited by: 6•References: 32

Able-bodied, and increasingly people with disabilities, represent a key audience for mega-events; occasions that act as crucibles where social problems endemic to host destinations can be exposed and tackled through targeted social policy. Drawing on the social model of disability, the paper examines how Japan utilised Tokyo 2020 as a field configuring event to disrupt systems of ableist thinking and tackle physical and attitudinal barriers restr…

    Open Access•Simon Gérard•ARTICLE•L Homme•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 29

  • Ableism as a regulator of social practice and disabled peoples’ self-determination to participate in sport and physical activity

Ian Brittain, Rui Biscaia et al.•ARTICLE•Leisure Studies•2020•Cited by: 9•References: 53

Building on the theories of ableism, social practice and self-determination, this article proposes a framework to aid explaining why disabled people (DP) are less likely to access and participate in sport and physical activity (S&PA). We argue that ableism acts as a regulatory mechanism for each of the elements (habitus, capital and field) and different forms of capital (social, cultural, economic and symbolic) of Bourdieu’s concept of social pra…

  • The impact of austerity on the London 2012 Summer Olympics participation legacy from a grassroots sports club perspective: An institutional logics approach

Simon Gérard, Ian Brittain et al.•ARTICLE•Leisure Studies•2020•References: 36

This study explores the impact of austerity on the London 2012 Summer Olympics participation legacy from a grassroots sports club perspective, utilising institutional theory. The study adopted a mixed methods approach including semi-structured interviews with 11 stakeholders involved in grassroots sport alongside a review of key policy documentation (n = 8) and relevant literature. In keeping with the institutional logics perspective, these data …

    Open Access•Simon Gérard•ARTICLE•Techniques & culture•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 31

  • The Gaze in Ibn al-Haytham

Open Access•Simon Gérard, Gérard Simon•ARTICLE•The Medieval History Journal•2006

The article looks at the revolutionary shift of visual interpretation as it occurred in the works of one of the most prominent Arab scientists, Ibn al-Haytham. In his critique of the visual theories of Euclide and Ptolemy, Ibn al-Haytham developed a new conception of estimating distance. Distance is no longer calculated geometrically by the visual faculty, but by the interpretation of signs which are implicit in the visual field and of which an i…

Open Access•Simon Gérard, Gérard Simon•ARTICLE•Arabic Sciences and Philosophy•1992
