  • The House of European History, Food for Thought and Reflection

    Open Access•Chantal Kesteloot•ARTICLE•International Public History•2020

In May 2017, the House of European History opened its doors in Brussels. Long awaited, this new museum represents a small revolution in the museum landscape. It stands out both because of the scale of the project - the history of Europe - and the specific role given to each visitor. The idea is not to impose a narrative on the visitor, but to encourage critical understanding. Visitors should be led to question the concept of Europe from its begin…

  • Monarchie et odonymie bruxelloise

    Chantal Kesteloot•ARTICLE•La Revue Nouvelle•2020

  • Greedy elites and poor lambs: How young Europeans remember the great war

Open Access•Pierre Bouchat, Laurent Licata et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social and Political…•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 9

The present study examines current social representations associated with the origins of the Great War, a major event that has profoundly affected Europe. A survey conducted in 20 European countries (N = 1906 students in social sciences) shows a high consensus: The outbreak of the war is attributed to the warring nations’ leaders while the responsibility of the populations is minimized. Building on the concept of social representation of history …

  • Years After: What is the relation between pacifist attitudes and social representations of the Great War

Pierre Bouchat, Laurent Licata et al.•ARTICLE•Peace and Conflict Journal of…•2018•Cited by: 1

In this paper we use a social representational perspective to consider the interplay between pacifist attitudes and representations of World War I, on a large sample of European students. WWI gave rise to pacifist movements across the globe. Across 10 European countries (N = 1347 undergraduate students), we invited participants to report the first five words that came to their mind when thinking about this event and measured their level of pacifi…

  • A comparative look at a centenary. A review of World War I commemorative events in Brussels: BSI synopsis

Open Access•Serge Jaumain, Joost Vaesen et al.•ARTICLE•Brussels Studies•2017

The centenary of World War I has marked an abrupt change: historical events will never be commemorated in the same way, especially in Belgium. The federated entities have demonstrated the autonomous role which they intend to play in future events of this type. The Brussels-Capital Region was not outdone. While the political choice to be directly involved in the commemorative events was made later there than in the other main regions and communiti…

  • A century of victimhood: Antecedents and current impacts of perceived suffering in World War I across Europe

Open Access•Pierre Bouchat, Laurent Licata et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social…•2017•References: 1

  • A century of victimhood: Antecedents and current impacts of perceived suffering in World War I across Europe

Open Access•Pierre Bouchat, Laurent Licata et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social…•2017•Cited by: 6•References: 47

The present study addresses antecedents and consequences of collective victimhood in the context of World War I (WWI) across 15 European nations ( N = 2423 social science students). Using multilevel analysis, we find evidence that collective victimhood is still present a hundred years after the onset of the war and can be predicted by WWI‐related objective indicators of victimization at national and family levels. This suggests that collective vi…

  • The traces of World War I in Brussels: BSI synopsis

Open Access•Serge Jaumain, Virginie Jourdain et al.•ARTICLE•Brussels Studies•2016

The hundredth anniversary of World War I has put the spotlight on this period once again. The media coverage of the commemorations is unprecedented and even surprising for a conflict which has remained in the memorial shadow of the even more deadly World War II. While there was every reason to believe that the Great War was only a distant memory, it must also be noted that it is still the object of true curiosity on the part of the general public…

  • The Past in Belgium: Different Memories and Controversial History in a Divided Society

    Open Access•Chantal Kesteloot•ARTICLE•European Review•2013•Cited by: 3

This contribution focuses on the spirit and the associated behaviours belonging to Belgian society. It deals with the past and, more specifically, with the legacy of the two world wars. In which way did Flemings and Francophones interact? What is the real nature of their relations described from the roots of the many issues and embedded consequences seen even today? Why is there a different vision of the past and how did the situation evolve with…
