W 1913 roku we Wrocławiu została zorganizowana Wystawa Stulecia. Jednym z elementów gigantycznego kompleksu wystawowego była "wioska kongijska" (niem. Kongodorf) wybudowana w parku rozrywki. Celem niniejszego artykułu, powstałego w oparciu na krytyczną analizę planu "wioski murzyńskiej" (niem. Aerobics Made in Poland: Women’s Mass Leisure Activity in the Socialist State, 1983–1989
The first aerobics club in Poland was opened in the autumn of 1983. Hanna Fidusiewicz, a former national team member in artistic gymnastics, was integral in that process. Her efforts brought about the aerobics revolution in its Polish version, and the glocalization of the leisure activity. Under her direction, socialist Poland adapted commercial aerobics as a global commodity in the 1980s. The pre-existing circumstances and available resources de…

Online workouts and fitness instructors' physical autonomy in times of the Covid-19 pandemic
This paper adds to the limited number of studies about physical autonomy and practice shifts among fitness instructors who responded to the change brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic and moved their professional activity online. I conceptualize physical autonomy as the ability of moving unrestrained and unhindered. I apply the online-offline ethnography to explore the interdependencies between digital media/technologies and the embodied practi…
Introduction: From Western to Peripheral Voices
Instrumental Touch: A Foucauldian Analysis of Women's Fitness
Group Pilates classes in commercial fitness gyms are among the most common forms of mindful fitness in Warsaw. The instructors teaching these classes often correct the participant's posture by touching them. While academic publications often critique fitness as a disciplinary practice, much fewer studies analyse touch understood as one of disciplinary techniques. Similarly, little is known about the experiences of fitness culture participants who…

A Site Shaped by Discontinuity
In this paper, the authors focus on the place-making practices which have emerged in the Polish post-Soviet military base - Borne Sulinowo. The new civil town (1993-2017) forms a unique reality, as it employs Polish, German and Russian elements, and interweaves the past threads of civil settlements and garrison life with the present. The authors analyze the process of place-making drawing on their research in a site shaped by discontinuity. The a…
World War I “Cartographies”: Mapping the Polish Landscape of Forgetting in Legnica
This article focuses on mapping the landscape of forgetting in the context of World War I in Legnica (Liegnitz), a town in southwestern Poland. It describes the process of (re)constructing and (re) negotiating the cultural landscape of the town by using the metaphors of conversation and conflict. This analysis shows that World War I remains a past that is impossible to deal with by Legnica’s contemporary inhabitants. *** Osrednji fokus članka je …

The 'Degraded' Landscape of a Post-Soviet Military Base in Poland: Outside vs. Inside View
This article focuses on the context and lasting consequences of the withdrawal of the Russian Federation military forces from the town of Borne Sulinowo in Poland in the 1990s. Combining an analysis of local and all-Polish media with interviews and observations conducted in Borne Sulinowo, the article distinguishes between insiders' and outsiders' perspectives on this former military base in order to demonstrate how degradation was as much a feat…
