  • Goethe's Werther and the critics

Bruce Duncan•BOOK•Goethe's Werther and the critics•2004

When Goethe's first novel, Die Leiden des jungen Werther (The Sorrows of Young Werther) appeared in 1774, it caused a sensation that is hard to exaggerate. "Werther fever" gripped not just Germany, but Europe and North America, and even Japan and China. Numerous editions are still in print in many languages, and in English-speaking lands the novel is regularly read on campuses in comparative literature and "great book" courses." "Literary critics…

Open Access•P Deery, Bruce Duncan et al.•ARTICLE•Labour History•2001

The split in the Labor Party in the mid 1950s was the culmination of an enormous struggle for the soul of the party, waged by fair means or foul. - Locked in bitter ideological dispute were, on the one hand, a small but energetic group of Communists and their sympathisers and, on the other, anti-Communist forces led by B.A. Santamaria. - Santamaria's role, and the activities of his semi-clandestine - organisation, the Movement, created enormous c…

  • Remembering Schiller: The Centenary of 1859

    Bruce Duncan, Duncan W Bruce•ARTICLE•Seminar A Journal of Germanic…•1999

November 10, 1859, marked a unique occurrence in German history. Perhaps the largest secular event in the German-speaking world up to that point, the Centenary still overshadows, in both its popular appeal and symbolic significance, all other public celebrations of a figure from high culture. Because it was not orchestrated wholly from above, in contrast to many other such observances, its planning and execution fully reflected many of the sociop…

    Open Access•Carol T Mowbray, Evan Cohen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Psychology•1992•References: 2

A substantial amount of research on homeless mentally ill individuals within the last 5 years has clarified their numbers, characteristics, and service needs. Research is lacking, however, on effective service models. A Mental Health Linkage model is presented, derived from practice principles in the literature, including outreach, community integration of mental health services, and meeting clients on their terms. The model is described and data…

  • Fate and Coincidence in Arnim's Seltsames Begegnen und Wiedersehen

    Bruce Duncan, Duncan W Bruce•ARTICLE•Seminar A Journal of Germanic…•1979

Seltsames Begegnen und Wiedersehen seems particularly susceptible to the charge of formlessness traditionally levelled at Arnim's work.

  • Hand, Heart, and Language in Minna von Barnhelm

    Bruce Duncan•ARTICLE•Seminar A Journal of Germanic…•1972

The distinction between hand, heart, and eye is a theme commonly used in the eighteenth century to deal with the problem of the whole man. Following the themes of hand and heart, as well as the analogous distinction between the languages of wit and heart, through Minna von Barnhelm reveals that Lessing's comedy conforms to this tradition. The play does not so much portray the loving Minna's conquest of a proud Tellheim as it calls into question t…
