    The Labor Party gained its first parliamentary representation in South Australia with two by-election victories in the Legislative Council and the House of Assembly in 1891 and 1892, but it first became signifi cant as a parliamentary caucusing group with the election of eight repre sentatives to the House and six to the Council in the 1893 general election. Twelve Labor men were returned in 1896 and eleven in 1899
