  • Slavery in Capitalism: A Deep History

    Open Access•Tâmis Parron•BOOK•Slavery in Capitalism•2026

The enslavement of Africans in the Americas profoundly shaped the continent's demography, cultures, languages, and legal systems, playing a decisive role in modern economic growth and the rise of industrial capitalism. Yet, its historical interpretation remains contested. One view sees modern slavery as beginning with the transatlantic slave trade, disconnecting it from earlier traditions in Europe, Africa, and Asia. Another claims slavery is a u…

  • Bringing Capital Back In: The Industrial Revolution and the Crisis of Slavery in the British Empire

    Open Access•Tâmis Parron•ARTICLE•Itinerario•2025

This essay, by revisiting the capitalism and slavery debate, explores the material relations between the Industrial Revolution and the crisis of Black slavery in the British Empire from the perspectives of critical theory and global history. After suggesting that the debate has made capital invisible as a category of historical analysis, I argue that the Industrial Revolution unleashed a process of widening trade circuits around the Atlantic and …

  • History and totality in the work of Dale Tomich

    Open Access•Leonardo Marques, Tâmis Parron•ARTICLE•Cultural Dynamics•2024•References: 6

Dale Tomich's significant contributions to methodology and theory in historical writing have been underexplored in theoretical and methodological discussions. This article fills this gap by examining the influence of the Marxian-Hegelian historical tradition, foundational to critical theory, on Tomich's work. The study also considers how his work has shaped the field of slavery studies and historiography more broadly and emphasizes some of the mo…

African slaves were brought into Brazil as early as 1530, with abolition in 1888. During those three centuries, Brazil received 4,000,000 Africans, over four times as many as any other American destination. Comparatively speaking, Brazil received 40% of the total number of Africans brought to the Americas, while the US received approximately 10%. Due to this huge influx of Africans, today Brazil’s African-descended population is larger than the p…

  • Capital and World Labor: The Rise and Fall of Slavery in the Nineteenth Century

    Open Access•Tâmis Parron•ARTICLE•Historia Crítica•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 10

Objective/context: The boom-and-bust of New World slavery in the nineteenth century has always been a major topic of scholarship. In this essay, I suggest that the literature devoted to this theme, the so-called "capitalism and slavery debate," has made capital invisible as a category of analysis due to its over-reliance on classical and neoclassical economics. As a result, slavery itself has been poorly historicized. My purpose is to put forth a…
