The Australian Anglican Historical Documents and Images Project
The sponsoring Anglican History Seminar, which meets annually, determined to extend the collection to cover digitized documents and images from the history of the Anglicanism in Australia generally. Dr Brian Dickey joined Dr Treloar in this expanded phase of the project. The Revd Bruce McAteer, General Secretary of the ACA acts as publisher. Why Were There No Poor Laws in Australia
There were no paupers aboard the First Fleet, nor any poor laws. There were paid officials of the central state under the direction of the Home Office; there was a military force of Marines, some with their families; and there were convicts, state dependents who legally were no longer the responsibility of a parish but were under the control of the Home Office. During June 1892 relations between the managements and the miners at Broken Hill deteriorated. In 1889 the miners had achieved the closed shop and a system of wage rates based on time. In June 1892 the managers proposed to substitute for this system one based on contract. The economic context was one of contracting opportunity and falling profits.
