We Are a Farming Class’: Dubbo’s Hinterland, 1870–1950

In this article my purpose is to measure the popular response in Australia to three key moments that marked the outbreak and early months of the Pacific War – the Japanese attacks on Pearl Harbor and Malaya, the publication of John Curtin’s ‘The Task Ahead’ article, and the British surrender of Singapore. In comparing the responses of the nation’s political leaders with those of the population more generally, my aim is both to contrast these reac…

Exclusionary Empire: English Liberty Overseas, 1600–1900
Consisting of an introduction and ten chapters, Exclusionary Empire examines the transfer of English traditions of liberty and the rule of law overseas from 1600 to 1900. The Murray: A River and its People
The Murray is a book about landscape and fish, about memory and concepts, about imagination and desire. Through a complex interweaving of history, poetry, art and individual memories, Paul Sinclair has created an original and subtly conceived work, offering imaginative space to think about land and water in new ways. The focus is on shifts and changes: the brief heyday of the riverboats and their transformation into a tourist attraction; the decl…

Australian Legends: Representations of the Bush, 1813–1913∗
This paper explores the representation of Aborigines, squatters, swagmen, shepherds, shearers, selectors and rural women, constructed in travellers’ accounts, literature, melodrama and the press in nineteenth‐ and early twentieth‐century Australia. It argues that it was not only the members of the ‘nomad tribe’ who were valorised for their heroic achievements, their quintessentially Australian characteristics. Squatters, selectors and frontier wo…
