Seven Late Twentieth-Century Lives: The Mass Observation Project and Life Writing
From its revival in 1981, the Mass Observation Project has collected life writing. In response to open ended questionnaires (‘directives’), MO correspondents send in what often amount to fragments of autobiography. While this material has been explored by researchers ‘horizontally’, to discuss attitudes and behaviour in relation to the themes raised by particular directives, my book Seven Lives from Mass Observation is the first attempt to use th…
Seven Lives from Mass Observation: Britain in the Late Twentieth Century
The book uses autobiographical writing contributed to Mass Observation since 1981 to explore the social and cultural history of late-twentieth-century Britain. Prompted by thrice-yearly open-ended questionnaires, Mass Observation’s volunteers wrote about their political attitudes, religious beliefs, work, childhoods, education, friendships, marriages, sex lives, mid-life crises, aging—the whole range of human emotion, feeling, attitudes, and expe…

The Mass Observers: A History, 1937-1949
This is the first full scale history of Mass-Observation, the independent social research organization which, between 1937 and 1949, set out to document the attitudes, opinions, and everyday lives of the British people. Through a combination of anthropological fieldwork, opinion surveys, and written testimony solicited from hundreds of volunteers, Mass-Observation created a huge archive of popular life during a tumultuous decade which remains cen…
Nine Wartime Lives: Mass-Observation and the making of the modern self
This book provides a fascinating re-evaluation of the social history of the Second World War and the 20th century making of the modern self. Using the wartime diaries of nine individuals, the book illuminates the impact of war on attitudes to citizenship, the changing relationships between men and women, and the search for meaning in a wartime context of limitless violence. The diaries from which this book is derived were written by some of the u…
The Tale of Sammy Spree: Gender and the Secret Dynamics of 1940s British Corporatism
Prompted by a 1947 shop-floor jingle preaching fuel economy this essay explores neglected aspects of the politics of austerity in mid twentieth-century Britain. Though a burden to the housewife, austerity also carried discourses of citizenship into the private sphere of the home in ways that were potentially challenging to masculine identities. By examining how anxieties aroused by this challenge were played out in electoral, institutional and pe…

The historiography of the British labour movement in the twentieth century has been dominated by a Whiggish concern with the rise and consolidation of the Labour Party and the emergence of trade unionism as an estate of the realm. Even Marxist historians have found it difficult to escape

Communist Politics in Britain: The CPGB from Its Origins to the Second World War
Rejoinder to Jean Monds
Jean Monds draws a valuable distinction between the workerist belief that ‘the struggle for power at the point of production leads to advances in class consciousness in and of itself and without the intervention of political organization in the working class’ and the correct assumption that ‘the key

Differential Exposure to Courses in Two Majors and Differences in Students' Value Responses
This research note presents data regarding differences in student responses to value statements and shows that the pattern of change differs depending on the major and the number of courses taken in that major. Sociology and business majors are compared since they typically differ along a conservativeliberal social values continuum. This allows a cohort design that can rule out maturation within the general culture (Telford and Plant, 1968) and t…

The Labour Aristocracy
Tom Nairn and Perry Anderson, in their articles recently published in nlr, have identified the third quarter of the 19th century as the period in which ‘corporativism’ gained its fatal grip on the British working class. The socialist revival of the 1880’s was an aberration which quickly
