The Neolithic settlement of Pyrgos‐Agia Marina
This paper is a preliminary presentation of the large settlement which has been just recently discovered at Pyrgos-Agia Marina, thanks to intensive field survey, geophysical prospections and HD documentation of the sections left behind by mechanical terracing for construction works. The discovery of the larger section and of the other remains indicates the presence of an early, long-lived, nucleated settlement on the west bank of the Pyrgos river…
School Snow Days, Absenteeism, and Student Achievement
Recent research on the effects of school cancellations because of snow or storms confirms what school authorities in Canada and the United States have understood for some time: missed school days have a detrimental effect upon student learning. Disrupted instructional time and student learning have been analyzed in Massachusetts and in policy studies conducted in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. One 2012 study in Massachusetts showed a stron…

Issues of theory and method in the analysis of Paleolithic mortuary behavior
Mortuary behavior (activities concerning dead conspecifics) is one of many traits that were previously widely considered to have been uniquely human, but on which perspectives have changed markedly in recent years. Theoretical approaches to hominin mortuary activity and its evolution have undergone major revision, and advances in diverse archeological and paleoanthropological methods have brought new ways of identifying behaviors such as intentio…
What artists value when providing workshops for clinical students in a regional training setting
This study investigates artists’ perspectives in participating as non-traditional (not medically trained) teachers in a clinical training programme. We conducted semi-structured one-to-one interviews with artists who provided art-based workshops to undergraduate clinical students within the ENRICH programme, a unique clinical training programme in regional Australia. We identified five interconnected conceptual themes. Artists’ constructed value …
Training “Blue-Blooded” Canadian Boys
Athleticism, masculinity, and sports are intimately connected in most boys’ schools. Colonial versions of the famous British public school sprang up over the nineteenth century in an overwhelmingly Protestant, Anglo-Saxon Ontario. Foremost among them were what came to be known as the “Little Big Four” group of schools, Upper Canada College (Toronto, 1829), Trinity College School (Weston, 1865), Bishop Ridley College (St. Catharines, 1889), and St…
The Belgammel Ram, a Hellenistic-Roman Bronze Proembolion Found off the Coast of Libya
The Belgammel Ram was found off the coast of Libya in 1964, and examined during 2008–9. The following techniques were used: surface non-contact digitizing using a laser scanner, reflectance transformation imaging using polynomial texture mapping and hemi-spherical harmonics, digital photogrammetry with dense surface modelling, structured light optical scanning, and X-ray fluorescence analysis. For internal structure the ram was examined by X-radi…

Dutch Sector-Wide Supplementary Pensions
There is considerable interest in the design and funding of European pension systems. While many commentators emphasise the financial burden of underfunded European social security systems, less understood are the structure and performance of European supplementary pensions. We introduce readers to the Dutch system of funded supplementary pensions, focusing upon the governance structure of those pension funds in the context of European competitio…

Mutuality at a Distance? Risk and Regulation in Marine Insurance Clubs
In this paper I investigate an institution which combines two forms of risk regulation commonly regarded as antithetical. In the governmental mode, associated with the rise of capitalism, the welfare state, and commercial insurance, regulation is centralised and spatially removed from the risk itself, and involves the surveillance, prediction, and control of risks posed by large-scale populations of atomised individuals or companies. This is in c…
