    Born in Leicester, England, and raised in a working-class family, Richardson emigrated to northern Manitoba in 1911. She was influential in the women's and peace movements in both countries. Devoutly religious, she challenged orthodoxy and worked outside the mainstream churches for peace and social justice. She cofounded one of the earliest suffrage groups in Manitoba and was a key activist in peace movements during the Boer War and World War I. …

    The United Nations' Fourth World Conference on Women, held in Beijing from 4 to 15 September 1995, was the latest in a series which began in 1975, International Women's Year, and continued through the UN Decade for Women (1976-85). Each conference adopted an action plan whereby member nations agreed to take certain steps to improve the status of women and bring about equality, development, and peace (the Decade themes).
