Transforming pre-service teacher education through virtual exchange: A mixed-methods analysis of perceived TPACK development
Across the globe teachers are increasingly using online communication tools to bring together learners from different countries, and offer them social interaction opportunities to learn a new language or a new skill via Virtual Exchange (VE). While there is some mostly anecdotal evidence of VE on satisfaction and improving language skills, few studies have investigated the impact of VE on pre-service teachers’ TPACK development using mixed method…

Energy Monitoring in Residential Environments
In the face of ongoing environmental concerns, there is a strong push worldwide to improve efficiencies and curtail consumption of energy. The European Union (EU) has risen to these challenges by announcing ambitious 20-20-20 targets. These targets aim to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 20% (in comparison to 1990 levels), increase the contribution of renewables by 20% of the total energy produced, and achieve 20% improvement in energy efficiency …
Learner Autonomy and the Theory of Sociality
In his classic definition of learner autonomy as ‘the ability to take charge of one’s learning’, Henri Holec (1981: 3) clearly envisages autonomy as an individual capacity. Effectively, for Holec, learner autonomy involves a greater or lesser degree of independence both from the teacher and from conventional means of tuition: Learning taken charge of in this way by the learner is self-directed or undertaken on an autonomous basis. This acceptance…
Between the social and the selfish: Learner Autonomy in Online Environments
This paper explores what it means to be an autonomous learner in an online social context. Using distinctions originally drawn by Jürgen Habermas, it argues that classic accounts of learner autonomy as teleological action are inadequate to explain learner activity in group settings. It points out that learners in such settings display attitudes and behaviours identified with human sociality (empathy, altruism, reciprocity, fairness and collaborat…
The notions of control and consciousness in learner autonomy and self-regulated learning: A comparison and critique
This paper explores two influential theories of self-directed learning: learner autonomy and self-regulated learning, principally as evidenced in the writings of Henri Holec, David Little, Phil Benson, Barry Zimmerman and Paul Pintrich. The paper charts parallels and divergences between these two approaches, identifying any opportunities for mutual enrichment and implicitly raising the question of which is the more convincing. The differences bet…

Revisiting Deficit Hysteria
THE LATEST ECONOMIC NEWS (May 2004) from the United States, Japan, and Asia is positive. Of all the G7 countries only Canada remains obsessed with balanced budgets and avoiding deficits. In Japan unemployment has now fallen to 4.7 per cent from 5.4 per cent a year ago and growth is a robust 5.6 per cent The United States is running a deficit that is almost 5 per cent of its GDP, which the Democrats deplore and the New York Times dislikes. But an …
