These books are welcome additions to the still-modest literature on the history of consumption in Canada, but if there were a consumer watchdog for books, it would flag them for misleading titles. Their protagonists are not “buying,” they are thinking and arguing: in Michael Dawson’s Selling Out or Buying In? Debating Consumerism in Vancouver and Victoria, 1945–1985, about regulations governing store-opening hours, and in Bettina Liverant’s Buyin…

  • Village shops and country stores 1

    Douglas Mccalla•CHAPTER•Routledge Companion to the…•2018

This essay addresses village shopkeeping under five headings: goods, shopping, credit, management and “continuity and change”. It begins with goods because stocking and selling products from beyond its locality were the shop’s central role (although that could be combined with other local business). Shopping involved choosing what to buy, and where; for the latter, the village shop’s proximity was an essential advantage. A purchase did not comple…

Country stores were universal in Upper Canada, and they are a necessary component of every living history site. Yet systematic explorations of the actual work of such stores in nineteenth-century North America, based on direct primary evidence, are uncommon; and powerful (and often conflicting) stereotypes of them persist, in living history settings and in the historical literature. This article goes beyond such standard images by using evidence …

Based on account books, a frequently overlooked type of source, this is a study of grocery purchases made by sample customers from some country stores in Upper Canada (Ontario), in selected years between 1808 and 1861. Although literary sources suggest otherwise, no one bought chocolate; but many people bought tea, tobacco, sugar, and salt, evidently at standard levels for contemporary British society. As time went by, a growing range of products…

More precisely, it might be said that the businessmen of the time found the years 1850 to early 1857 ones of unprecedented prosperity, but from 1857 to 1859 at least hey felt they were suffering under an unprecedented depression. Toronto shared in this. From 1850 to 1856 its population grew from 25,166 to 41,760, and the annual value of impo…
