  • The geography of literacy: Understanding poleward increases in literacy rates

Open Access•Lucian Gideon Conway, E Van De Vliert et al.•ARTICLE•Asian Journal Of Social Psychology•2022

Asian social psychology has often focused on East/West comparisons. However, a latitudinal psychology perspective suggests that cultures will vary in predictable ways along north/south (latitudinal) gradients, rather than along east/west (longitudinal) gradients. We apply this perspective to better understand the geographical placement of literacy rates across the world. We find across 206 nations that latitude shows no linear relationship with w…

  • Crimmigrating Narratives: Examining Third-Party Observations of US Detained Immigration Court

    Open Access•Carole Lévesque, Jack Dewaard et al.•ARTICLE•Law & Social Inquiry•2022•References: 21

Examining what we call "crimmigrating narratives," we show that US immigration court criminalizes non-citizens, cements forms of social control, and dispenses punishment in a non-punitive legal setting. Building on theories of crimmigration and a sociology of narrative, we code, categorize, and describe third-party observations of detained immigration court hearings conducted in Fort Snelling, Minnesota, from July 2018 to June 2019. We identify a…

  • Prevalence of social media addiction across 32 nations: Meta-analysis with subgroup analysis of classification schemes and cultural values

    Open Access•C Cheng, Yan-Ching Lau et al.•ARTICLE•Addictive Behaviors•2021

In the cyber era, people interact with others not only face-to-face but also through social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram. Social media addiction has emerged as a problem of global concern, with researchers all over the world conducting studies to evaluate how pervasive the problem is. However, the prevalence rates of social media addiction reported in the literature vary dramatically. The present meta-analysis aimed to systemati…

  • Proximal versus distal ecological stress: Socio-ecological influences on political freedom, well-being, and societal confidence in 159 nations

Open Access•Lucian Gideon Conway, L Chan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social and Political…•2021•References: 8

Previous work from a socio-ecological perspective reveals that ecological stress has important effects on political, cultural, and psychological outcomes. However, that work has been limited by (1) a focus on distal forms of ecological stress that are hard for societies to control, and (2) a lack of large-scale conceptual replications. The present study aims to fill in these gaps by simultaneously testing the effects of both more distal ecologica…

  • Don't Blame Me, Blame Those around Me: How Family and Friends Induce Unethical Acts

    L Chan, Carol Y Yoder•ARTICLE•Deviant Behavior•2021•References: 51

While family and close friends often encourage prosocial behaviors, their influence can also be malevolent. The current research examines how people react to scenarios where a close other pressures a protagonist to commit an unethical act. The vignettes varied who was encouraging the unethical act (family vs. peer), level of pressure (low vs. high), who benefits from the action (self vs. close other) while also considering whether participants re…

    Open Access•Nuevos Retos, Y De et al.•ARTICLE•Cultura Ciencia y Deporte•2020

The aim of this work was to compare students’ physical activity and sedentary levels between two high schools, one with a natural playground and the other with a traditional one, according to the recess periods (mid-morning and lunchtime) and the sex of students. The sample consisted of all the students attending their school playground at the time of the measurement. The System for Observing Play and Leisure Activity in Youth (SOPLAY) was used t…

  • Political Contamination of Social Psychology: A Review of Crawford and Jussim’s (2017) Edited Book on The Politics of Social Psychology

Open Access•L Chan, James Mcfarland et al.•ARTICLE•Social Justice Research•2018

  • Autocratic Government Moderates the Relationship Between Culture and Legal Restriction

    Open Access•L Chan, Lucian Gideon Conway•ARTICLE•Journal of Cross-Cultural…•2018•References: 13

Laws that restrict citizens exist in every form of government. Although previous research has shown that legal restriction is tied to culture-level variables such as collectivism, we propose and test a novel interactive model specifying that the culture-legal restriction relationship will depend on the level of democracy or autocracy present in the government. Specifically, legal restrictions in democracies should show more consistent relationshi…
