Maurice Gro, Maurice Gross•ARTICLE•Langages•1999•Cited by: 1

The common notion of verbal auxiliary is presented and various situations which lead to generalize the notion are discussed. It is shown that aspectual auxiliaries should have the same status as tense auxiliaries. It is also shown that numerous nominal constructions are better analyzed when their main verb is considered as an auxiliary (e.g. Bob stopped selling this books = Bob (stopped + interrupted) the sale of his books

  • Synonymie, morphologie dérivationnelle et transformations

Maurice Gro, Markus Groß et al.•ARTICLE•Langages•1997•Cited by: 4

We compare synonymy relations to transformational relations. Transformations are the equivalence relations defined by Z. S. Harris. They include adjectivizations and nominalizations, they move entirely derivational morphology into the domain of syntax. These transformations operate between elementary sentences and they make use of support verbs. With this extension, we show that synonymy relations can be viewed as generalizing basic transformatio…

  • On the Failure of Generative Grammar

Maurice Gro, Maurice Gross•ARTICLE•Language•1979•Cited by: 10

An attempt to construct a generative grammar of French with a coverage comparable to that of traditional grammars has failed. A description has been arrived at in the course of this work, however; it is much more complex than expected, and turns out to be entirely taxonomic. This result calls into question the validity of the so-called theory of generative grammar
