Managing down’
This qualitative study investigates how care homes in South-West England managed and responded to the everyday challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. While many studies explore the impact of the pandemic on care home staff, residents and families, limited research addresses care homes’ experiences with filtering top-down rules and guidelines during ‘uncertain times’. Drawing on the concept of ‘street-level bureaucracy’, this study examines how prof…
Can participants authoritatively report on the emotional valence of their mind wandering
Individuals might vary in their ability to accurately monitor their ongoing conscious experiences of mind wandering. Such findings have serious implications for understanding the accuracy of participants' ability to report their ongoing thoughts. We extend these previous findings to ask if individuals vary in the ability to accurately monitor and report on the emotional valence of their task-unrelated thoughts (TUTs). Participants completed a sus…
Who can strategically modulate mind wandering? A preregistered replication and extension of Seli et al. (2018)
Further unpacking individual differences in mind wandering
Executive attention ability predicts task-unrelated thoughts (TUTs). • Not all TUTs might be related to executive attention or impact performance similarly. • We examined two forms of TUTs: Emotional Valence and Awareness during a simple task. • Negatively Valenced TUTs and TUTs with awareness were predicted by executive attention. • The findings highlight the heterogenous nature of mind wandering. Previous work has established a link between exe…
Co-designing adult weight management services
Co-design is an increasingly popular approach to designing health in services but can be difficult to achieve within traditional funding and commissioning practices. Drawing on our case studies, we present key considerations for those wanting to co-design health services, noting the importance of building strong relationships, creating supportive organisational cultures, and developing the evidence base
Age-Related Differences in Mind Wandering
Focusing on different dimensions of thought content, such as emotional valence, can provide new insight into age-related differences in mind wandering. Older adults' mind wandering reports were less negative and neutral compared to younger adults' reports suggesting a positivity bias for older adults. However, this positivity bias does not seem to affect task performance. We discuss the implications of the findings for mind wandering theories and…

Stress and cognitive functioning during a pandemic
In this commentary we discuss a downstream consequence of increases in stress and anxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic. Stress and anxiety can lead to mind wandering, which in turn competes for limited cognitive resources. We encourage researchers to be understanding and patient concerning the inevitable cognitive impact of the pandemic and subsequent reduced productivity levels from our students, colleagues, and ourselves. (PsycInfo Database Rec…

The protective effects of brief mindfulness meditation training
Examining factors involved in stress-related working memory impairments
A large and growing body of research demonstrates the impact of psychological stress on working memory. However, the typical study approach tests the effects of a single biological or psychological factor on changes in working memory. The current study attempted to move beyond the standard single-factor assessment by examining the impact of 2 possible factors in stress-related working memory impairments. To this end, 60 participants completed a w…
Perceiving a Negative Event as Central to One’s Identity Partially Mediates Age Differences in Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms
The results are consistent with the Socioemotional Selectivity Theory view that older adults tend to use cognitive strategies designed to protect emotional health
The community pharmacy and discursive complexity
The present paper examines the developing role of the medicines counter assistant (MCA) based in community pharmacies in the UK. In recent years, community pharmacies have been promoted as sources of primary care advice, and this has been accompanied by an increase in the number of pharmacy-only medicines made available for purchase without prescription. At the forefront of these changes is the MCA, who responds to requests for medicines and also…
