Positing Language Relationships Using Aline
Several methods for determining a numerical distance between languages have been proposed in the literature. In this paper we implement one of them, the ALINE distance. We also develop a methodology for comparing its results with other language distance metrics. In particular, we generate trees from distance matrices created by the language distance metrics using two different algorithms developed by computational biologists: Neighbor Joining and…
Analogical Modeling
Analogical Modeling (AM) is an exemplar-based general theory of description that uses both neighbors and non-neighbors (under certain well-defined conditions of homogeneity) to predict language behavior. This book provides a basic introduction to AM, compares the theory with nearest-neighbor approaches, and discusses the most recent advances in the theory, including psycholinguistic evidence, applications to specific languages, the problem of cat…

Modeling cognition in SI
In this paper we discuss methodological issues pertaining to cognitive modeling of simultaneous interpretation. We briefly introduce the notion of cognition and efforts to model aspects of language-related processing. Previous work identifying cognitive processes in SI is sampled, and empirical SI studies are also mentioned. A rationale for modeling SI cognition follows, and relevant issues are sketched: whom to model, system dynamics, applicable…

Modeling SI
This paper presents an overview of a cognitive modeling approach to the study of simultaneous interpretation. It discusses current work in adapting an established cognitive modeling system to permit study of lower-level cognition in interpretation. A sketch is given of the basic cognitive architecture of the system as used in modeling comprehension. The integration of the comprehension component with other tasks is explored, and a unified framewo…
