Suffering from a sense of injustice: Children's Activism in Liberal State Formation at the Saint John Boys Industrial Home, 1927-1932
In 1929, residents of the Boys' Industrial Home in Saint John, New Brunswick, engaged in a series of violent acts to protest the conditions they experienced in the institution and their sense of being unjustly treated. Those actions occurred at a serendipitous moment, as the Home was one among the collection of child welfare institutions under study by the Canadian Council on Child Welfare and its various agents. The Council was engaged in the pr…
Listening With the Third Ear”: An Exploration of Empathy in Musical Performance
This qualitative investigation sought parallels between empathy as experienced in musical performance relationships and empathy as described in therapeutic encounters. Nine professional musicians were invited to offer their reflections on the ways in which relational connections influenced their overall performance experience. Three themes emerged as illustrative of parallels between empathic connections in musical performance and those in therap…
The Abiding Nature of Empathic Connections: A 10-Year Follow-up Study
This qualitative study explores the enduring impact of the therapeutic encounter. Participants, who had engaged in therapeutic relationships 10 years previously and endorsed empathy as a catalyst for personal growth, were invited to reflect on their experiences and to articulate ways in which the relationships have continued to shape their ongoing development. Two predominant themes emerged: therapeutic relationship as a foundation for change, an…

Five female clients who had consecutive therapeutic relationships with two different therapists recount their experiences of change and growth. Each client reported that forming relational connections with the therapists evoked healing and development. Experiences of personal growth are presented from clients' perspectives and in th…

Previous experiences of being “misunderstood” or “not heard” stood in stark contrast to experiences of being empathically understood in their relationships with the two therapists. Participants experienced being heard when therapists created a safe space …

Father Knows Best: The Use and Abuse of Power in Freud's Case of Dora
The authors take a revolutionary look at the most famous of Sigmund Freud's cases and make significant connections between Dora and therapeutic relationships in the 1990s. In their careful examination of the case history, Lakoff and Coyne demonstrate that while much of Freud's method has changed, the basic relationship between therapist and client, their power relations, and the consequences thereof, remain intrinsically unaltered. The authors ra…
