  • Visualizing the Red Army’s Demobilization: Photography, Reconstructing Community and Creating Post-War Memory

    Open Access•Robert Dale•ARTICLE•Journal of War and Culture Studies•2022•References: 12

This article explores the photographs taken of the Red Army’s homecoming in the summer 1945. It examines what these reveal about post-war reconstruction and the re-establishment of communities. It argues that official demobilization photography was a carefully constructed and highly politicized attempt to visualize veterans’ reintegration, which subsequently structured war memory. The research is based on two forms of primary evidence, first the …

Analysing the place of the Gulag within the Stalinist system, and documenting the experience of its prisoners, have long been important research fields. In recent years, however, a new generation of scholars has thoroughly reassessed the nature of the Soviet camp system. New archival evidence, fresh approaches and novel perspectives are deepening and nuancing scholarly understandings of the Gulag. What has emerged is an appreciation of the comple…

  • Demobilized Veterans in Late Stalinist Leningrad: Soldiers to Civilians

    Robert Dale•BOOK•Demobilized Veterans in Late…•2015

This book investigates the demobilization and post-war readjustment of Red Army veterans in Leningrad and its environs after the Great Patriotic War. Over 300,000 soldiers were stood down in this war-ravaged region between July 1945 and 1948. They found the transition to civilian life more challenging than many could ever have imagined. For civilian Leningraders, reintegrating the rapid influx of former soldiers represented an enormous political,…

This article explores the divisions created by the Great Patriotic War, its aftermath and the reconstruction of Russian cities in the late 1940s and early 1950s. It examines the conflicts created by rebuilding housing, infrastructure, restoring communities and allocating resources in cities where war's painful legacy continued to be felt. The war's impact varied enormously between cities on the frontlines and in the rear. Contrary to official pro…

  • The Great War in Russian Memory

    Robert Dale•ARTICLE•Europe Asia Studies•2013•Cited by: 1

Historians of European societies have long examined the memory, myth, commemoration and remembrance of World War I after 1918.In contrast, historians of Soviet Russia have argued that the Great War disappeared from official, public and popular memories. The rejection of an ideologically suspect 'imperialist war' in favour of myths built around Revolution and the Russian Civil War made the Soviet Union unique amongst combatants in ignoring, forgett…

  • The Valaam Myth and the Fate of Leningrad's Disabled Veterans

    Open Access•Robert Dale•ARTICLE•The Russian Review•2013•Cited by: 5

This article explores an enduring Soviet myth, the myth of Valaam. According to this widely believed story in 1946 or 1947 vagrant disabled veterans were forcibly cleared from the streets of Soviet cities and deported to Valaam, an isolated archipelago of fifty islands, approximately 250 kilometres north of Leningrad. These myths continue to be repeated by both historians and the general public, but little evidence has been provided to support th…

This article reassesses the myth of the heroic homecoming and successful reintegration of Red Army veterans returning to Leningrad after 1945. Soviet propaganda created an official version of demobilization, which presented veterans as exemplary citizens who returned to civilian life with relative ease. This myth created the impression that ordinary Leningraders welcomed home returning veterans as heroes. Throughout the twentieth century the demo…

  • Using linguistic phenomena to motivate a set of coherence relations

    Alistair Knott, Robert Dale•ARTICLE•Discourse Processes•1994•Cited by: 25•References: 12

The notion that a text is coherent in virtue of the “relations” that hold between the elements of that text has become fairly common currency, both in the study of discourse coherence and in the field of text generation. The set of relations proposed in Rhetorical Structure Theory (Mann & Thompson, 1987) has had particular influence in both of these fields. But the widespread adoption of “relational” terminology belies a certain amount of confusi…
