  • A nearly exhaustive experimental investigation of bridge effects in English

Open Access•Nick Huang, Diogo Almeida et al.•ARTICLE•Language•2025•Cited by: 2

In many languages, finite-clause-embedding verbs vary in whether they allow wh-dependencies to cross from the embedded to the matrix clause—a phenomenon we call 'bridge effects'. Why bridge effects exist has been the subject of much debate; we argue that contributing to the lack of consensus are the relatively small samples of verbs (from twelve to seventy-five for English) previously tested in the literature. To resolve this issue, we report two…

  • Subliminal wh-islands in brazilian Portuguese and the consequenceS for Syntactic theory

    Open Access•Diogo Almeida•ARTICLE•Revista da ABRALIN•2014•Cited by: 9

Categorical acceptability judgments form an important and productive heuristic that provides a substantial body of data to theoretical linguists. Despite its popularity, however, they might not always provide an accurate representation of the acceptability facts, especially when it concerns complex patterns of judgments across a range of different sentences types. In this work, I present evidence that, when categorical acceptability is substitute…

  • Assessing the reliability of textbook data in syntax: Adger's Core Syntax

    Open Access•Jon Sprouse, Diogo Almeida•ARTICLE•Journal of Linguistics•2012•Cited by: 23•References: 9

There has been a consistent pattern of criticism of the reliability of acceptability judgment data in syntax for at least 50 years (e.g., Hill 1961), culminating in several high-profile criticisms within the past ten years (Edelman & Christiansen 2003, Ferreira 2005, Wasow & Arnold 2005, Gibson & Fedorenko 2010, in press). The fundamental claim of these critics is that traditional acceptability judgment collection methods, which tend to be relati…
