Motherhood curated
This study presents findings from a quantitative content analysis of 975 German momfluencer Instagram accounts, exploring how motherhood is portrayed in the context of the platform economy. Grounded in a social constructivist perspective the analysis investigates how increasing self-professionalization—measured by follower count—affects self-presentation and thematic focus. Social media platforms reward visibility and engagement, prompting influe…
Dissemination and reception of a functional tourette-like behavior via YouTube
With the emergence of such videos addressing Tourette syndrome on YouTube, in which affected persons present themselves, Tourette experts observe an increasing number of patients showing Tourette-like symptoms. Interviews show that they are not only familiar with these videos but have also dealt with them in different ways. Medical analyses combined with the evaluations of the interviews give reason to believe that the videos can be interpreted a…
Cross-linguistic patterns in the lexicalisation of bring and take
This study investigates the linguistic expression of bring and take events and more generally of the semantic domain of directed caused accompanied motion (‘directed CAM’) across a sample of eight languages of the Pacific and the Americas. Unlike English, the majority of languages in our sample do not lexicalise directed CAM events by simple verbs, but rather encode the defining meaning components – caused motion, accompaniment, and directedness …
Mass social media-induced illness presenting with Tourette-like behavior
Currently, we are facing a new manifestation of functional neurological disorder presenting with functional Tourette-like behavior (FTB). This study aimed to show characteristics of this phenotype presenting as an outbreak of "mass social media-induced illness" (MSMI) and to explore predisposing factors. Between 5-9/2021, we prospectively investigated 32 patients (mean/median age: 20.1/18 years, range: 11-53 years, n = 16 females) with MSMI-FTB u…
Multimodal language use in Savosavo
Departing from a short overview on pragmatic gestures specialized for the expression of refusal and negation, the article presents first results of a study on those gestures in Savosavo, a Papuan language spoken in the Solomon Islands in the Southwest Pacific. The paper focuses on two partly conventionalized gestures (sweeping and holding away) and shows that speakers of Savosavo use the gestures in a very similar way as speakers of German, Engli…
Motherhood in social media
Social network sites allow users participation as sharing of information, exchange of ideas and presentation of themselves. In this process, the focus is on a wide range of formerly private topics that are now publicly negotiated. In recent years women who post content about their motherhood on Instagram are becoming increasingly popular. Thus, motherhood, both its individual negotiation and the associated structural conditions, increasingly take…
Handling talk
This paper discusses how a particular type of recurrent gesture, the holding away gesture, highlights and structures spoken utterances in German and Savosavo, a Papuan language spoken in Solomon Islands in the Southwest Pacific. In particular, the paper poses the following questions: What kinds of discursive functions of this gesture are observable in these speech communities? How do they map onto the two speech communities? Are there cross-lingu…
Gender Representations on YouTube
Introduction Media and gender are intricately linked in our society. Every day we see representations of women and men on the screen, read about politicians in the press, watch influencers on YouTube or go to the cinema where we meet screen heroes. Our images and notions of gender draw on these media narratives and role models. Children and young people are socialised with these views and cultivate their own identity and gender roles accordingly.…
Fronted NPs in a verb-initial language – clause-internal or external? Prosodic cues to the rescue
This paper investigates prosodic features of fronted constituents in the verb-initial Oceanic language Gela (spoken by about 16.000 people in Solomon Islands). Although Gela’s basic constituent order is verb-(object-)subject/predicate-subject, constituents can appear in front of the verbal predicate. Fronted constituents in Gela can be interpreted as pre-clausal (i.e. external to the following clause, immediately preceding it) or clause-initial (…

Documenting Endangered Languages
"The rapid decline in the world's linguistic diversity has prompted the emergence of documentary linguistics. While documentary linguistics aims primarily at creating a durable, accessible and comprehensive record of languages, it has also been a driving force in developing language annotation and analysis software, archiving architecture, improved fieldwork methodologies, and new standards in data accountability and accessibility. More recently,…
Mediale Gewalt
