Von Uns Aus Betrachtet – Eben Verrückt!’: Louise Von Coburg, Profligacy, and Felix Salten's Campaign for a Civil Consensus
Royal scandals intrigued Austrian (and indeed European) society right through the nineteenth and into the twentieth century. In the light of Karl Kraus's commentary and Felix Salten's literary treatment, the case of Princess Louise of Belgium, who left her husband Philipp von Coburg and was institutionalised for six years in 1898 because her adultery and her uncontrolled spending were diagnosed as symptoms of insanity, can be read as an irritant …

Family Reunions in German Adventure Literature on Africa of the 1880s – A Vision for Colonial Intervention: Karl Burmann and Karl May
Literature for young readers provides a pertinent barometer for the moods and preoccupations of a society at a given time. The study of two examples of adventure literature set in Africa, Karl Burmann's Im Herzen von Afrika (1880) and Karl May's Die Sklavenkarawane (1889/90), illustrates the preponderance of certain motifs like family reunions in the imaginary conquest of colonial space and the definition of the role Germans assigned to themselve…
Physiognomy in Profile: Lavater's Impact on European Culture
Johann Caspar Lavater's richly illustrated Physiognomische Fragmente was published in Germany between 1775-78 and was rapidly translated into the major European languages. Presenting his theories on how the configuration of facial features may be held to show qualities of mind or character, Lavater's work triggered a physiognomical frenzy (to quote his adversary Georg Christoph Lichtenberg) in late eighteenth-century Europe, and people are said t…

Die Kunst der Vater todtet das Leben der Enkel: Decadence and Crisis in Fin-de-Siecle German and Austrian Discourse

He himself, a septuagenarian by then, claimed to have lost all strength for such negotiations. And then he continued, in a letter dated 11 August 1892, "Und sie we…

Beautiful Jewesses have been among the stock figures featuring in literature in German for centuries. The present study is the first consistent attempt to typify the figure of the 'beautiful Jewess' by examining 70 novels and shorter narratives from four centuries. The 'beautiful Jewess' topos is the expression of a non-Jewish and non-female view, i.e. a view from the outside. The correspondingly stereotyped features of the literary image of the …
