  • Overt PRO in Gã

Open Access•Deborah Allotey, Iman Paul et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in African Linguistics•2024

This paper presents data from Gã (Kwa, Niger-Congo language spoken in Ghana) that show that controlled subjects of non-finite predicates must be overt in this language. The presence of an overt pronominal subject in a non-finite embedded clause is surprising from the perspective of languages such as English and French, where such subjects must be covert (PRO). We provide evidence that the overt pronoun in Gã patterns with obligatorily controlled …

  • Culminating and non-culminating accomplishments in Malagasy

Open Access•Iman Paul, Ileana Paul et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistics•2020•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 25

Malagasy is a language with non-culminating accomplishments. There is, however, a specific prefix (maha-), which appears to entail culmination. Moreover, verbs prefixed withmaha- display a range of interpretations: causative, abilitive, 'manage to', and unintentionality. This paper accounts for these two aspects of this prefix with a unified semantic analysis. In particular,maha-encodes double prevention. The double prevention configuration is as…

  • Reduced structure in Malagasy headlines

    Iman Paul, Ileana Paul•ARTICLE•Linguistic Variation•2017•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 10

This paper examines the register associated with headlines in Malagasy. While in many languages headlines appear to have reduced structure as evidenced by the absence of certain grammatical markers (determiners, copulas, tense), Malagasy headlines show a change in word order from VOS to SVO. It is argued that like English, Malagasy headlines involve a truncated syntactic structure and that the absence of certain functional projections accounts fo…

  • Sluicing without wh-movement in Malagasy

Iman Paul, Ileana Paul et al.•CHAPTER•Sluicing•2012

The standard analysis of sluicing, in which wh-movement is followed by clausal deletion, predicts that sluicing should not be found in languages that do not have wh-movement. Such a conclusion has already been shown to be incorrect for a number of wh-in-situ languages, and it is also incorrect for the Austronesian language Malagasy, which exhibits a construction that has all the hallmarks of sluicing, despite the language being wh-in-situ. The ch…

  • Subjects

Open Access•Iman Paul, Ileana Paul•ARTICLE•Language and Linguistics Compass•2010

This paper presents an overview of how the notion of ‘subject’ has been defined in linguistic theory. Although the term developed out of Artistotelian logic, its use has been narrowed to refer to the grammatical relation (or function). Over the past 50 years, the definition of subject and its universality have been the source of much debate. Broadly Chomskian approaches claim that grammatical relations such as subject are not primitives of the gr…

  • On the Topic of Pseudoclefts

    Open Access•Iman Paul, Ileana Paul•ARTICLE•Syntax•2008•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 24

This paper presents arguments in favor of a pseudocleft analysis of a certain class of sentences in Malagasy, despite the lack of an overt wh-element. It is shown that voice morphology on the verb creates an operator-variable relationship much like the one created by wh-movement in free relatives in English and other languages. The bulk of the paper argues in favor of an inversion analysis of specificational pseudoclefts in Malagasy: a predicate …

  • Two types of non-noun-incorporation

    Open Access•Iman Paul, Ileana Paul•ARTICLE•ZAS Papers in Linguistics•2004•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 1

The goal of this paper is to investigate cases of apparent noun-incorporation in Malagasy, a western Austronesian language spoken in Madagascar. Looking at examples [...], one may ask whether or not Malagasy has nounincorporation. [...] The organization of this paper is as follows: I begin with a general discussion of the distribution of nominals in Malagasy - with and without determiners. In section 3 I turn to [...] two constructions [...] and …

  • Ve as a Second-Position Clitic

    Iman Paul, Ileana Paul•ARTICLE•Oceanic Linguistics•2001

Ve as a Second-Position Clitic1 Ileana Paul Abstract Contrary to previous claims in the literature, it is argued that ve, the yes-no particle in Malagasy, is a second-position clitic. Although ve typically appears at the right edge of the predicate phrase, in sentences with nonstandard word order, it surfaces in second position. Ve is contrasted with other particles that are not second-position clitics but pattern with adverbs. The implications o…
