  • Emotional interference in cognitive tasks

    Open Access•My V H Nguyen, Benjamin J Tamber-Rosenau et al.•ARTICLE•Bilingualism Language and Cognition•2026

This study examined emotional interference and facilitation in cognitive processing among heritage bilingual and monolingual young adults across six tasks varying in emotional and linguistic demands. Results showed that bilinguals often exhibited comparable or more efficient processing than monolinguals in more demanding conditions (i.e., nonword rejection, high-load working memory tasks). Emotional valence effects were task-dependent and rarely …

  • L1 and L2 contributions to English reading in middle school struggling readers

    Open Access•Paul T Cirino, Kelly T Macdonald et al.•ARTICLE•Bilingualism Language and Cognition•2026

This study evaluated English and Spanish language proficiency, and balance among these proficiencies, in relation to reading achievement in a sample of 161 middle school current and former English learners known to be struggling readers. Students were administered English and Spanish language assessments and also reported on their language usage; English reading outcomes (word reading, reading fluency, reading comprehension) were also assessed. F…

  • Beyond bilingual and monolingual

    Open Access•My V H Nguyen, Evelyn D Rodarte et al.•ARTICLE•Bilingualism Language and Cognition•2026

Research teams studying bilingualism often focus on a specific population of bilinguals, which can limit the generalizability of their findings. This study explored how U.S. adolescents who speak a non-English language vary in their language experiences and cognition using data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study. The sample included 6683 English monolinguals, 1138 heritage bilinguals, 592 dual language education (DLE) bi…

  • Examining Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms and Substance Use in Latine College Students

    Daniel O’connell, Anka A Vujanovic et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2025

Background: Latine young adults often experience turmoil leading to trauma exposure and symptoms in their native countries, frequently leading to migration, making it valuable for psychologists across the Americas to understand trauma-based mental health in Latines. Given the disproportionate experience of trauma and posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) among Latine young adults and the common age of onset for problematic substance use, there is …

  • The role of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in bilingual language switching and non-linguistic task-switching

    Open Access•Kelly A Vaughn, Benjamin J Tamber-Rosenau et al.•ARTICLE•Bilingualism Language and Cognition•2024

Previous research suggests that bilingual language control requires domain-general cognitive control. Recent research suggests that exploration of individual differences is key for understanding the relationship between bilingual language control and cognitive control. The current study used multi-voxel pattern analysis (MVPA) to examine within-subject patterns of fMRI activity in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) during bilingual langua…

  • Is a Giraffe's long neck a new machine built out of old parts? Commentary on age effects in second language acquisition

    Open Access•Arturo E Hernandez•ARTICLE•Brain and Language•2023

  • Characterization of English and Spanish language proficiency among middle school English learners with reading difficulties

    Open Access•Kelly T Macdonald, David J Francis et al.•ARTICLE•Bilingualism Language and Cognition•2022

Among bilinguals, language-related variables such as first and second language proficiency and balance may be related to important cognitive and academic outcomes, but approaches to characterizing these variables are inconsistent, particularly among at-risk samples of children. The current study employed comprehensive language assessment of English and Spanish language skills and contrasted various approaches to the characterization of language a…

  • The multifaceted nature of language across adulthood

Open Access•Michele T Diaz, Arturo Hernandez et al.•ARTICLE•Brain and Language•2022

  • German in childhood and Latin in adolescence

Open Access•Arturo E Hernandez, Juliana Ronderos et al.•ARTICLE•Humanities and Social Sciences…•2021

The nature of word etymology, long a topic of interest in linguistics, has been considered to a much lesser extent in the word recognition literature. The present study created a database of overlapping words from the English Lexicon Project (ELP) and a database with the age of acquisition (AoA) norms which were categorized as either Germanic or Latin-based. Results revealed that Germanic words were learned earlier than Latin-based words. Germani…

  • The acquisition of syllable-level timing contrasts by English- and Spanish-speaking bilingual children with normal hearing and English- and Spanish-speaking bilingual children with cochlear implants

  • Speech sound learning depends on individuals’ ability, not just experience

    Open Access•Pilar Archila-Suerte, Pilar Archila‐Suerte et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2016

Aims: The goal of this study was to investigate if phonetic experience with two languages facilitated the learning of novel speech sounds or if general perceptual abilities independent of bilingualism played a role in this learning. Method: The underlying neural mechanisms involved in novel speech sound learning were observed in groups of English monolinguals ( n = 20), early Spanish–English bilinguals ( n = 24), and experimentally derived subgro…

  • Bilingualism and Attention

Poorna Kushalnagar, H Julia Hannay et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Deaf Studies and…•2010

Early deafness is thought to affect low-level sensorimotor processing such as selective attention, whereas bilingualism is thought to be strongly associated with higher order cognitive processing such as attention switching under cognitive load. This study explores the effects of bimodal-bilingualism (in American Sign Language and written English) on attention switching, in order to contrast the roles of bilingual proficiency and age of acquisiti…

  • Cognitive Consequences of Asymmetrical Visual Distraction

    Benjamin C Storm, Arturo E Hernandez•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•2007•References: 1

The authors explored whether manipulating the location of distraction in the participants' visual field influences the degree of competition between visual and other cognitive processes. If a cognitive task is lateralized to a particular hemisphere, visual distraction directed toward that same hemisphere should impair performance on that task more than should visual distraction directed toward the other hemisphere. Consistent with this hypothesis…

  • Age of acquisition

    Arturo E Hernandez, Ping Li•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•2007•Cited by: 12

The acquisition of new skills over a life span is a remarkable human ability. This ability, however, is constrained by age of acquisition (AoA); that is, the age at which learning occurs significantly affects the outcome. This is most clearly reflected in domains such as language, music, and athletics. This article provides a perspective on the neural and computational mechanisms underlying AoA in language acquisition. The authors show how AoA mo…
