  • The Itinerary to Explore Headwaters of the New Left’s Cultural Studies

Keiko Ikeda•ARTICLE•The International Journal of the…•2017

The 1980s was a period when the academic current for leisure studies led to the birth of the study of sports history. Japan was not a latecomer in this scholarly stream. More significantly, cultural issues were thought not the part of various phenomena in a society, but the key issues for class integration and class strife. After writing my PhD thesis on Pierce Egan, one of the earliest sport journalists influenced by the idea of early radicals i…

  • Collateral damage

Don Bysouth, Keiko Ikeda et al.•ARTICLE•Pragmatics and Society•2015

This investigation examines ‘teasing’ of non-combatant children by US military service personnel in occupied Iraq and Afghanistan. The majority of existent investigations of teasing and related practices place significant conceptual importance on the intentions of the teaser – such that a target can understand that the tease is not true. However, in data examined here it appears that targets (children) do not understand the language in which the …

Keiko Ikeda•ARTICLE•The International Journal of the…•2014

The ideal of Japanese womanhood was created according to an educational ideology suited to a modern nation state. One regularly used concept was ‘ryōsaikenbo’, a mixed ideology, drawing together idealised images of the British lady and traditional Japanese women. Another imitated concept was Japanese athleticism called new Bushidō influenced by British boys' public school morality during the era of the Anglo-Japanese Alliance. However, there was …

Following the Second World War, Japanese women have gained greater equality in terms of their legal status, career opportunities and general personal freedom. However, cultural inequalities remain, and this is no less so than in sport. Access to job opportunities in the sports media, for example, has been restricted, while participation in sport overall and in some sports in particular has been subject to sexist attitudes. The development of wome…

  • How women's concerns are shaped in community-based disaster risk management in Bangladesh

    Keiko Ikeda•ARTICLE•Contemporary South Asia•2009•Cited by: 7•References: 3

This article elaborates on how concerns regarding gender in community-based disaster risk management are shaped through interaction between local agents of development and communities in Bangladesh. As women and men have different experiences in disaster, gender concerns should be fully addressed by the community and integrated in the action they take up to reduce disaster risks. The term ‘local agents of development’ refers to individuals engage…

  • Audience participation through interjection

    Keiko Ikeda•ARTICLE•Journal of Language and Politics•2009•References: 10

This study examines a particular modality of audience participation in Japanese municipal council sessions. As with parliamentary debates elsewhere (Carbó 1992, Antaki & Leudar, 2001), the prescribed participation framework in a Japanese council session is highly structured so as to facilitate deliberation for the public good. Accordingly, the formal institutional rules do not assign the audience ratified speaking rights during question-answer pe…
