  • Assessing Listening

    Open Access•Gary Buck•BOOK•Assessing Listening•2001

The book outlines the major areas of listening research in an accessible manner and provides language teachers with guidelines to design and develop suitable listening tests for their students.

  • Application of the rule-space procedure to language testing: Examining attributes of a free response listening test

    Open Access•Gary Buck, Kikumi K Tatsuoka et al.•ARTICLE•Language Testing•1998

This study uses the rule-space methodology to explore the cognitive and linguistic attributes that underlie performance on an open-ended, short-answer, listening comprehension test. This is the first application of the methodology to language testing. The rule-space methodology is an adaptation of statistical pattern recognition techniques applied to the problem of diagnosing the cognitive attributes (knowledge, skills, abilities, strategies, etc…

  • The Subskills of Reading: Rule-space Analysis of a Multiple-choice Test of Second Language Reading Comprehension

Open Access•Gary Buck, Kumi Tatsuoka et al.•ARTICLE•Language Learning•1997•Cited by: 1

The rule-space methodology is an application of statistical pattern-recognition techniques to diagnosing the cognitive attributes (knowledge, skills, abilities, strategies, etc.) underlying test performance. The methodology provides diagnostic information on individual test-takers on each of these attributes. We used the methodology to analyze performance on a multiple-choice reading comprehension test. Based on a literature search, we hypothesiz…

  • The appropriacy of psychometric measurement models for testing second language listening comprehension

    Open Access•Gary Buck•ARTICLE•Language Testing•1994

This article examines the assumptions made by classical and item response (IRT) measurement models, especially the assumption of unidimensionality, and compares these with current theories of listening comprehension, which commonly explain listening in cognitive information-processing terms as a multidimensional interaction between a number of linguistic and non- linguistic skills. On the basis of this, it is hypothesized that second language lis…

  • Standards in testing: A study of the practice of UK examination boards in EFL/ESL testing

    Open Access•J Charles Alderson, Gary Buck•ARTICLE•Language Testing•1993

It is often asserted that the UK tradition in language testing is different from the North American tradition. Whereas in North America it is considered normal practice to examine the psychometric properties of tests, in the UK more emphasis is thought to be placed on test content. However, there has been no systematic study of this stereotypical view. The research reported in this article aimed to investigate the issue by examining the practices…

  • Translation as a language testing procedure: Does it work

    Open Access•Gary Buck•ARTICLE•Language Testing•1992

This article looks at translation from L2 to L1 as a language testing procedure. Two studies are presented. The first examines the reliability and validity of a translation reading test under conditions where minimal, or no effort is made to ensure rater reliability. Seven raters, with no instructions or training, rated translations by 121 Japanese junior college students. All estimates of reliability proved acceptable. Criterion validity was exa…

  • Listening Comprehension: Construct Validity and Trait Characteristics

    Open Access•Gary Buck•ARTICLE•Language Learning•1992•Cited by: 3•References: 25

It has been customary among both language teachers and testers to regard listening as a separate skill in language proficiency. However, the evidence for the existence of listening comprehension as a separate trait is contradictory. This paper reviews the conflictingevidence, and presents two studies that use the multitrait-multimethod (MTMM) methodology to examine the construct validity of the listening trait. These were carried out in Japan usi…

  • The testing of listening comprehension: An introspective study1

    Open Access•Gary Buck•ARTICLE•Language Testing•1991

The present research uses the verbal report methodology to examine how listening tests work, and how processes not normally accessible through quan titative research methods influence test performance. Six introspectees pro vided data on four main areas of interest: the influence of the short-answer test method on the measurement of listening comprehension; whether test items can measure 'higher-level' cognitive processes; whether test items can …

  • Social Evolution and Structural-Functional Analysis: An Empirical Test

    Gary L Buck, Gary Buck et al.•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•1968•Cited by: 6•References: 5

The study of social change as reviewed in the literature has either emphasized an evolutionary mode of analysis or a structural-functional mode of analysis. Using a Guttman scaling technique applied to fifty contemporary societies, the utility of combining these two major orientations is demonstrated. Empirical confirmation for Talcott Parsons' recent essay, Evolutionary Universals in Societies, is presented. However, some modifications in Parson…
