Data‐Driven Learning
Data‐driven learning (DDL) is a language‐learning approach grounded in the tools and techniques of corpus linguistics. Popularized by Tim Johns in the late 1980s, DDL promotes language learning by giving learners direct access to authentic language data. It also fosters learner autonomy by likening learners to language researchers who explore corpus data, identify patterns, and form hypotheses to solve language problems. Traditionally implemented…
From theory to data: Testing introspective claims on synonymous French adjectives ‘prochain’ and ‘suivant’ using corpus-based methods
This paper presents a corpus-based study that evaluates variables identified introspectively by Berthonneau (2002) in relation to the alternation between two French synonymous: prochain (‘next’ or ‘upcoming’) and suivant (‘following’ or ‘next’). Employing a multifactorial and behavioural profiles approach, we explore the asymmetry in their temporal and spatial applications. Our findings highlight distinct uses with temporal nouns, whereas uses wi…
Teaching Reading for Case Law in English for Legal Purposes
Data‐Driven Learning: A Linguistically Authentic Complement to Coursebooks for Foreign Language Learners
This study explores the potential of data‐driven learning (DDL) as a complement to traditional coursebooks for multilingual learners of French as a foreign language. Motivated by the need to address insufficiencies in coursebooks, such as oversimplified and misrepresented grammar rules, the study aims to examine how DDL facilitates the learning of French, focusing on adjective placement. To investigate this, the study employed a mixed‐methods exp…
Expanding Methodological Approaches in DDL Research
This paper analyses the methodologies in 148 empirical data‐driven learning studies for L2 English in prestige journals to examine best practice. Manual coding and corpus analysis of key words and n‐grams from the past 5 years (2018–2022) explore the field as a whole and how methodologies have evolved, suggesting improvements and future avenues for research
De l’élève à l’apprenant: Les rôles vers l’autonomie
« What’s in a name ?
Corpora in language teaching and learning
This timeline looks at explicit uses of corpora in foreign or second language (L2) teaching and learning, i.e. what happens when end-users explore corpus data, whether directly via concordancers or integrated into CALL programs, or indirectly with prepared printed materials. The underlying rationale is that such contact provides the massive contextualised exposure needed for language learning, but in a more controlled way than purely haphazard ex…
Corpus Use in Language Learning: A Meta-Analysis
This study applied systematic meta-analytic procedures to summarize findings from experimental and quasi-experimental investigations into the effectiveness of using the tools and techniques of corpus linguistics for second language learning or use, here referred to as data-driven learning (DDL). Analysis of 64 separate studies representing 88 unique samples reporting sufficient data indicated that DDL approaches result in large overall effects fo…

Data-Driven Learning: Taking the Computer Out of the Equation
Despite considerable research interest, data-driven learning (DDL) has not become part of mainstream teaching practice. It may be that technical aspects are too daunting for teachers and students, but there seems to be no reason why DDL in its early stages should not eliminate the computer from the equation by using prepared materials on paper-considerably easier for the novice learner to handle. This article reports on an experiment to see how l…
