  • Restructuring or Automaticity? Reading in a Second Language

    Open Access•Beverly Mcleod, Barry Mclaughlin•ARTICLE•Language Learning•1986•Cited by: 14•References: 11

In this paper we discuss the notion of automaticity as used in information-processing accounts of learning and recent criticism of this concept. It is suggested that improvement in performance can sometimes be due to a restructuring of the components of a task so that they are integrated and reorganized in new ways, thereby allowing procedures involving the old components to be replaced by more efficient procedures involving new components. We de…

  • Second Language Learning

    Open Access•Barry Mclaughlin, Tammi Rossman et al.•ARTICLE•Language Learning•1983•Cited by: 31•References: 34

The subjects were then presented with a list of 15 activities, and identified a preferred companion for each of the situations. The data were used to t…

  • The Relevance of Anthropology to Language Teaching

    Beverly Mcleod•ARTICLE•TESOL Quarterly•1976•Cited by: 1

The relevance of anthropological theory, methodology, and literature to language teaching is discussed. It is argued that culture should be taught explicitly in the language classroom, and that the anthropological theory of cultural relativity is useful in creating a judgment-free atmosphere. Both teacher and students should become amateur anthropoligists, exploring and testing their own and each other's cultures. The language classroom should be…
