From Mocks to Realities? A Case Study on the Social Impact of Mock Exams in University
This case study analyses the impact of intermediate mock exams in a first-year statistics course on the social inequalities observed in tertiary education. Through descriptive analysis and regression models of a sample of 478 students, we examine how these exams influence subsequent educational decisions. Our hypothesis states that students without a university-educated parent are more likely to attribute failure to innate ability, impacting thei…

Measuring attitudes towards ethnic minority patients
Ultimately, the REMP-3 instrument can contribute to more equity in healthcare by concisely and reliably assessing and monitoring attitudes in healthcare practitioners. This attitude assessment represents the potential of learning new skills and knowledge to address interactions with ethnic minority patients, which is especially useful during training situations like an internship
Reducing ethnic discrimination in rental applications
While field experiments are valuable in their ability to objectively analyse patterns of discrimination, research that focuses on reducing discrimination is systematically lacking. The present study addresses this gap. Building on both cognitive and behavioural processes that steer discriminatory decision-making and insights from diversity literature, we develop and test the effectiveness of a training intervention which is tailored to the specif…
Does Studying Latin in Secondary Education Predict Study Achievement in Academic Higher Education
Studying Latin in secondary education is still widespread in Europe and believed to result in cognitive benefits, even beyond the linguistic domain. In this study we explored the relation between such study and later academic achievement in higher education (N = 1,898). First, we demonstrated that Latin students exhibit increased levels of study achievement in higher education, particularly in study programs other than those covering science, tec…
How accurately do program-specific basic skills predict study success in open access higher education
The present study establishes program-specific basic skillsets in higher education. • These skillsets identify students at-risk of failing exams (up to 58%). • This identification is balanced against low error rates (up to 20%). • The methodology can be used to reorient and remedy students at-risk of failing. • Validation possibilities towards selection contexts are also discussed. Student fail rates in the first year of open access academic high…

Intercultural Competence Predicts Intercultural Effectiveness
Why does someone thrive in intercultural situations; while others seem to struggle? In 2014, Leung and colleagues summarized the literature on intercultural competence and intercultural effectiveness into a theoretical framework. This integrative framework hypothesizes that the interrelations between intercultural traits, intercultural attitudes and worldviews, and intercultural capabilities predict the effectiveness with which individuals respon…
