Exemplars, Generalisability and the Broader DLD Profile
Riches’ article proposes that developmental language disorder is a consequence of exemplar-based learning. While there is a lot of merit to the proposal, there are also areas that need further clarity – primarily whether the difficulty lies in the exemplars, the generalisation/abstraction processes that operate over exemplars, or both
Simulating the Relationship Between Nonword Repetition Performance and Vocabulary Growth in 2-Year-Olds
A strong predictor of children's language is performance on non-word repetition (NWR) tasks. However, the basis of this relationship remains unknown. Some suggest that NWR tasks measure phonological working memory, which then affects language growth. Others argue that children's knowledge of language/language experience affects NWR performance. A complicating factor is that most studies focus on school-aged children, who have already mastered key…
How the characteristics of words in child-directed speech differ from adult-directed speech to influence children’s productive vocabularies
Child-directed speech has long been known to influence children’s vocabulary learning. However, while we know that caregiver utterances differ from those directed at adults in various ways, little is known about any differences in the lexical properties of child-directed and adult-directed utterances. We compare over half a million word tokens from adult speech directed at children (from caregiver–child transcriptions) to the same quantity direct…
Experiences of child welfare social workers in addressing substance use among maltreated young mothers to prevent child maltreatment
Substance use during the perinatal period and while parenting can pose a significant risk to children's safety and well‐being. Mothers who have experienced child maltreatment are more likely to use substances than mothers without a history of maltreatment. This study explores how child welfare social workers experience supporting young, maltreated mothers struggling with substance use to prevent the intergenerational transmission of child maltrea…
CLASSIC Utterance Boundary
Word segmentation is a crucial step in children's vocabulary learning. While computational models of word segmentation can capture infants' performance in small-scale artificial tasks, the examination of early word segmentation in naturalistic settings has been limited by the lack of measures that can relate models' performance to developmental data. Here, we extended CLASSIC (Chunking Lexical and Sublexical Sequences in Children; Jones et al., 2…
Parenting and Mental Health needs of Young, Maltreated parents
Chunks of phonological knowledge play a significant role in children’s word learning and explain effects of neighborhood size, phonotactic probability, word frequency and word length
Concurrent visual learning of adjacent and nonadjacent dependencies in adults and children
Concurrent learning of adjacent and nonadjacent dependencies has been shown in adults only. This study extended this line of research by examining dependency-specific learning for both adjacent and nonadjacent dependencies concurrently in both adults and children. Seventy adults aged 18 to 64 (40 women, 30 men; Experiment 1) and 64 children aged 10 to 11 years (40 girls, 24 boys; Experiment 2) were tested with a new serial reaction time (SRT) tas…

Lifting the veil of depression and alcoholism in sport coaching
The purpose of this article is to explore the insights of an elite sport coach living with comorbid depression and alcohol misuse. Such consideration is necessary because as coaching is increasingly repositioned as a caring activity the wellbeing of coaches themselves has rarely been considered. To address this gap, a narrative analysis methodology and a story telling approach was used to present the experiences of a case study coach (Steve). The…
Bounded decision‐making, teachers’ reflection and organisational learning
Despite numerous efforts to align educational practice more closely with findings from educational research, there is little clarity about how educational practitioners can, in principle, use research. We propose a conceptualisation based on how research can contribute to practitioners’ thinking: specifically, our framework proposes that research can inform bounded decision‐making, teachers’ reflection and organisational learning. Practitioners c…
An objective examination of consumer perception of nutrition information based on healthiness ratings and eye movements
Objective Previous research on nutrition labelling has mainly used subjective measures. This study examines the effectiveness of two types of nutrition label using two objective measures: eye movements and healthiness ratings. Design Eye movements were recorded while participants made healthiness ratings for two types of nutrition label: standard and standard plus the Food Standards Agency's ‘traffic light’ concept. Setting University of Derby, U…
Assessing the Success of the Sale of Social Housing in the UK
This article evaluates whether the sale of social housing in the UK during the past three decades has been a success. It explores the avenues available to obtain homeownership, starting with the Right to Buy in 1980. It considers from multiple perspectives the impact of the right to purchase social housing. The article concludes that the drive to increase homeownership has produced a rather hazy picture in terms of ‘success’. From a policy perspe…

Multilingualism and bilingual education in Brunei Darussalam
The official language of Brunei Darussalam is Bahasa Melayu (Malay) yet the country is diverse both linguistically and culturally. The country has a long tradition of selective English medium education and since 1984 English has been available to all. This paper looks at three facets of language and language education in Brunei. Firstly it examines the relationship between Malay and the minority languages. Secondly the relationship between Englis…
