  • Brain Potentials Reveal Discrete Stages of L2 Grammatical Learning

    Open Access•Judith Mclaughlin, Darren Tanner et al.•ARTICLE•Language Learning•2010•Cited by: 6•References: 65

In this article we review several studies investigating the neural correlates of second-language (L2) grammatical learning in the context of novice adult learners progressing through their first year of L2 classroom instruction. The primary goal of these studies was to determine how and when learners incorporate L2 knowledge into their online language processing system. We show that at least some learners progress through discrete stages of gramm…

  • Novice Learners, Longitudinal Designs, and Event-Related Potentials: A Means for Exploring the Neurocognition of Second Language Processing

    Open Access•Lee Osterhout, Judith Mclaughlin et al.•ARTICLE•Language Learning•2006•Cited by: 11•References: 50

Research on the neurobiology of second language (L2) learning has historically focused on localization questions and relied on cross-sectional designs. Here, we describe an alternative paradigm involving longitudinal studies of adult, novice learners who are progressing through an introductory sequence of classroom-based L2 instruction. The goal of this paradigm is to determine how much L2 exposure is needed before learners incorporate L2 knowled…

  • Neural correlates of second-language word learning: Minimal instruction produces rapid change

Open Access•Judith Mclaughlin, Lee Osterhout et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Neuroscience•2004

  • Self-care and multiple sclerosis: A view from two cultures

    Open Access•Judith Mclaughlin, Ib Zeeberg•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•1993•Cited by: 7•References: 27

  • The schoolchild as health educator: Diffusion of hypertension information from sixth‐grade children to their parents

Judith Mclaughlin, Judith F Mclaughlin et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1992•References: 5

This study describes health risk‐factor information transfer from sixth‐grade classrooms to the home. A randomized control trial of 1,204 children in 21 elementary schools revealed clusters of families where transfer of hypertension information was high and low. Thirty‐three mothers of both groups participated in qualitative interviews to determine where, how, and why the information transfer did or did not take place. After constant comparison d…

  • The development of scales to assess knowledge and attitudes about genital herpes

Katherine Bruce, Katherine E M Bruce et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•1986•Cited by: 1

The Herpes Attitudes Scale (HAS) and the Herpes Knowledge Scale (HKS) were developed as research instruments to investigate knowledge and attitudes among college students about herpes. The HAS is a 40‐item Likert‐type scale with an internal consistency reliability coefficient of .91, based on a sample of 148 students. The HKS is a 54‐item true‐false test with a reliability coefficient of .88, with the same sample. Content validity of both scales …
