Paddling Together for Culturally Safe Emergency Care for Elders
This paper describes a wise practice for collaborative change through the Trauma- Informed and Culturally Safe Emergency Care for Nuu-chah-nulth Elders project. For decades, Nuu-chah-nulth Elders have been avoiding emergency care due to colonial trauma and a lack of culturally safe care. To begin addressing this community priority, the First Nations Health Authority, in partnership with Island Health and university partners, organized a two-day w…
The mental-attention Tai Chi effect with older adults
These gains suggest that Tai Chi can improve mental-attentional vigilance and executive control, when practitioners are sufficiently motivated to pursue this practice, and apply themselves (as our Chinese participants seem to have done). We found that Tai Chi enhanced mental attentional executives in the Chinese sample. The largely negative results with Non-Chinese participants might be explained by less strong motivation and by the relatively sh…
Improving the learning of clinical reasoning through computer-based cognitive representation
The computer-based cognitive representation approach improved the learning of clinical reasoning in both problem solving and knowledge construction
Quantitative Hardware Stages That Constrain Language Development
We argue the case for general cognitive-processing constraints on, and cognitive-developmental stages in, linguistic performance. We use the theory of constructive operators of Pascual-Leone to analyze the sorts of’software’ (i.e., content-bound) and ‘hardware’ (i.e., content-free organismic) processes relevant for a cognitive developmental model of language. Emphasis is placed on the hardware: mental-attentional capacity as a limit on linguistic…
I Couldn’t go Anywhere”: Contextualizing Violence and Drug Abuse: A Social Network Study
The authors examine the narratives of 24 substance-addicted welfare recipients to understand how their neighborhoods provide a particular context for substance abuse, violence, and social isolation. The authors also examine the relationships among substance abuse, violence, and social isolation. Overall, these narratives indicate that place of residence influences one’s social networks and exposure to drugs, which subsequently influence women’s e…
The Violent Matrix: A Study of Structural, Interpersonal, and Intrapersonal Violence Among a Sample of Poor Women
One goal of this paper is to present an integrated tripartite model of violence, with a focus on structural violence within an oppression paradigm. Using qualitative and quantitative data from 27 women (70% African American and 30% European American) who participated in a national substance abuse treatment demonstration program, we describe a model of violence in which structural violence is presented within a transactional relationship with inte…
Field Dependence as a Factor in Second Language Communicative Production
This study investigates the hypothesis that a more field-dependent cognitive style may be adaptive for certain components of second language proficiency. Native English speakers (n = 28) or students of English as a second language (ESL; n = 29) completed measures of language proficiency (formal and communicative) and field dependence-independence (FDI). Native English speakers performed better than ESL students on language measures, but not on FD…
