English medium instruction learners’ self-efficacy, engagement, and satisfaction; developing a measurement instrument
This paper describes the development of a survey instrument to measure learners’ self-efficacy, engagement, and satisfaction within the context of English Medium Instruction (EMI) classes, with reference to both language issues and the discipline being taught. The paper presents details of analysis of the instrument using the Rasch model. The survey was administered to 287 tertiary students enrolled in EMI classes in Japan. Results of a Rasch Pri…
The native speaker model in Japan
ENGLISH ABSTRACTThis paper describes a mixed methods study of Japanese first-year tertiary learners’ attitudes to English language learning models. It outlines the results from a survey comprised of a verbal guise test (measuring respondents’ attitudes to both linguistic and personality features) and vocabulary elicitation, which was administered to 87 participants. Following this, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 21 of these learne…
Self‐Efficacy and Collective‐Efficacy as Predictors of Engagement in Group Conversation
There is increasing interest in self‐efficacy (SE) as a variable to predict learner behavior during tasks, but many tasks involve learners working collaboratively in groups. Collective efficacy (CE) can be used to assess the feelings of the group about their overall ability to complete a task. It has been largely ignored in the field of second language acquisition, despite its potential to help us understand learner performance in groups. In this…
Speaking proficiency development in EFL classrooms
This paper outlines a classroom-based study on the timing of explicit language instruction. It also provides an alternative to the CALF (Complexity Accuracy Lexis Fluency) framework for analyzing learner language, which may not always be appropriate for EFL contexts. Two groups of learners, assigned to either a TBLT or a PPP condition, completed a speaking task. A follow-up task was given three months later, but with no explicit language focus fo…
The native speaker model and language learners
This article describes the development of an instrument designed to measure language learners’ attitudes toward native and non-native speakers, and localized Englishes, which may have been shaped by the continued prevalence of the native speaker model of English (NSM) in their learning context. After reviewing the literature regarding the NSM in relation to both teachers and learners, the article describes the development process, including two l…
Measuring Foreign Language Students' Self-Determination
Self-determination theory has been applied in various educational contexts. Language learning researchers have used factor analysis and structural equation modeling to investigate measures designed for this theory, but Rasch analysis has not been conducted. The Basic Psychological Needs Satisfaction and Frustration Scale (BPNSFS) and the Language Learning Orientation Scale (LLOS) were adapted for a Japanese tertiary educational context and admini…
Responding to the critics
This paper outlines a qualitative study of 10 in-service teachers in Japan who use a task-based language teaching (TBLT) approach in their language classrooms. The study investigates the reasons why these teachers began using TBLT, their beliefs about the advantages and disadvantages of implementing TBLT, and whether or not they agree with common criticisms levelled at TBLT for use in foreign language classrooms in Japan and Asia in general. Crit…
If I Were You
The concept of an individual swapping his or her body with that of another person has captured the imagination of writers and artists for decades. Although this topic has not been the subject of investigation in science, it exemplifies the fundamental question of why we have an ongoing experience of being located inside our bodies. Here we report a perceptual illusion of body-swapping that addresses directly this issue. Manipulation of the visual…
