  • Effects of virtual reality learning contexts on foreign language word production

Cong Liu, Qiuxia Liu et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Psychologica Sinica•2026

  • Learning Novel Words in an Immersive Virtual-Reality Context

    Open Access•Lu Jiao, Yue Lin et al.•ARTICLE•Language Learning•2025•References: 40

The present study used immersive virtual-reality (iVR) technology to simulate a real-life environment and examined its impact on novel-word learning and lexicalization. On Days 1-3, Chinese-speaking participants learned German words in iVR and traditional picture-word (PW) association contexts. A semantic-priming task was used to measure word lexicalization on Day 4, and again 6 months later. The behavioral findings of an immediate posttest showe…

  • An ERP study on novel word learning in an immersive virtual reality context

Open Access•Lu Jiao, Mengrui Zhu et al.•ARTICLE•Bilingualism Language and Cognition•2024

In this behavioral and electrophysiological study, we compare novel word learning, particularly lexical form acquisition, in an immersive virtual reality (VR) context with a picture-word (PW) association context. We also test whether inhibitory control and age of second language acquisition (L2 AoA) have modulating effects. Chinese speakers of L2 English learned two sets of German words, one set in each of the contexts. Behavioral performance fro…

  • The influence of L2 experience on L1 speech perception

Open Access•Rong Zhao, Lu Jiao et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

Aims: Previous studies have documented that consonants contribute more to lexically related processes than vowels in English, whereas an opposite pattern occurs in Mandarin Chinese processing. The current study aims to examine how the long-term learning of English (L2) influences Mandarin (L1) consonant, vowel, and tone perception in bilingual adults. It also attempts to examine the multi–competence theory at the level of speech perception. Metho…

  • The foreign language effect on altruistic decision making

Open Access•Cong Liu, Han Wang et al.•ARTICLE•Bilingualism Language and Cognition•2022

The present study investigated the foreign language effect within an altruistic decision making process. Chinese–English bilinguals made altruistic decisions in their native (L1: Chinese) and second language (L2: English). The decisions were framed in two ways: either as “not to harm” (harm frame) or as “to help” the other person (help frame) at one's economic cost. Behavioral results suggest that bilinguals might behave more altruistically in th…

  • Rights‐based accountability in aged care organisations

Open Access•Jinhua Chen, Graeme Harrison et al.•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of Public…•2022•References: 5

Addressing the urgent need for aged care providers in Australia to enhance their accountability, this study examines whether and how downward accountability (to clients) and lateral accountability (to employees) in aged care organisations are affected by beliefs and boundary controls exercised by the organisations’ management. Analyses were performed on survey data collected from 228 not‐for‐profit aged care providers across Australia. The analys…

  • Structural brain changes with second language learning

Open Access•Jesús García Gazólaz, Cong Liu et al.•ARTICLE•Brain and Language•2021

The underlying mechanisms that adapt with L2 learning are still poorly understood. The present longitudinal study examined the effects of L2 learning on grey matter structure of Chinese college freshmen majoring in English. Participants were scanned twice, one year apart. Our voxel-based morphometry analyses revealed that gray matter volume (GMV) decreased in the left anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and right inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) after L2…

  • Symmetries of comprehension-based language switch costs in conflicting versus non-conflicting contexts

Open Access•Cong Liu, Kalinka Timmer et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Aims: The present study aimed to investigate the effect of contexts (i.e., non-conflicting context versus conflicting context) on bilingual language switch costs during language comprehension. Methodology: Thirty-two unbalance Chinese-English bilinguals completed a modified comprehension-based language-switching task in two contexts. They made a judgement about the colour meaning of the word. In the non-conflicting context all words were presente…

  • Working memory demand of a task modulates bilingual advantage in executive functions

Open Access•Lu Jiao, Cong Liu et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019

Aims: The present study aimed to investigate the effect of task demand in working memory on bilingual cognitive advantage (interference suppression and response inhibition) in young bilinguals. Methodology: Experiment 1 was performed with the flanker, Go/No-go, and modified flanker tasks, in which the first two tasks were involved in lower storage demand of working memory and the last task was involved in higher storage demand of working memory. …

  • The effect of stakeholder culture on managers’ perceptions of stakeholder attributes in Australian not‐for‐profit organizations

Open Access•Lu Jiao, Graeme Harrison et al.•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of Public…•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 7

We examine the relation between stakeholder culture and managers’ perceptions of stakeholder attributes of power, legitimacy, and urgency in Australian not‐for‐profit (NFP) organizations. Examination of this relation is important because managers’ perceptions of stakeholder attributes determine how stakeholder relationships are managed, which affects (positively or negatively) the ability of NFP organizations to fulfil their social mission. Data …

  • Who and What Really Count? An Examination of Stakeholder Salience in Not‐for‐Profit Service Delivery Organizations

Open Access•Jinhua Chen, Graeme Harrison et al.•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of Public…•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 5

Motivated by the importance of understanding how managers of not‐for‐profit organizations (NFPs) in Australia perceive and prioritize their stakeholders, this study tests and applies Mitchell et al.’s (1997) stakeholder salience framework, enhanced by Neville et al.’s (2011) developments to the framework, in the not‐for‐profit context. The study examines the salience of six key stakeholder groups in NFPs, as perceived by top management, and the r…

  • The influence of different sex ratios and resource-gaining capability on male's mating selection

Yan Wang, Bowen Hou et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Psychologica Sinica•2017
