  • The Impacts of Heat and Air Pollution on Mortality in the United States

Open Access•Zeying Huang, Jungmin Lim et al.•ARTICLE•Weather, Climate, and Society•2024

Extreme heat events stress the body and can result in fatalities, especially for those with underlying health problems. Air pollution is another threat to health and is an important confounder of extreme heat risks. However, previous empirical studies that have addressed the joint health impacts of air pollution and heat rarely considered the endogeneity and spillover effects of air pollution. To fill this research gap, this article investigates …

  • Multimodal composing and second language acquisition

    Open Access•Jungmin Lim, Matt Kessler•ARTICLE•Language Teaching•2024•References: 16

Multimodal composing, which has sometimes been referred to synonymously as multimodal composition or multimodal writing, is the use of different semiotic resources (e.g., audio, visual, gestural, and/or spatial resources) in addition to linguistic text for making meaning. Notably, multimodal composing is neither a new type of writing nor a new area of research, with studies dating back to the early 2000s. In the domain of second language (L2) res…

  • Understanding text-based studies of linguistic development through goals for academic writing

Jungmin Lim, Magda Tigchelaar et al.•ARTICLE•Language Awareness•2022

Numerous studies of written language development have shown minimal improvement over the course of an instructional period, yet these solely text-based studies offer little explanation for the lack of changes in writers’ language because little is reported about the classroom and the participants. The purpose of this study is to use goal theory to better understand students’ instructional contexts and their writing behaviors as they relate to tex…

  • Methodological Synthesis of Cluster Analysis in Second Language Research

    Open Access•Dustin Crowther, Susie Kim et al.•ARTICLE•Language Learning•2021•Cited by: 6•References: 54

We present a review of second language researchers' use of cluster analysis, an advanced statistical method still uncommon but increasingly used to identify groups or patterns in a dataset and to examine group differences. After describing key methodological considerations in conducting cluster analysis, we present a methodological synthesis of 65 studies published between 1989 and 2018 that employed cluster analysis. We specifically review the u…

  • Trust and Patience after a Tornado

Open Access•Robert Shupp, Scott Loveridge et al.•ARTICLE•Weather, Climate, and Society•2017

This study examines how individuals’ trust levels and patience are affected by a tornado event. Affected and unaffected people were surveyed after a 2013 tornado in Moore, Oklahoma, that resulted in 24 fatalities. Findings suggest that those who self-identified as affected became more trusting in general as well as more trusting of police and fire authorities. Affected homeowners also exhibited less patience than their unaffected counterparts. Th…
