  • Artificial Language Learning as a Second Language Research Paradigm

    Open Access•Sarah Grey•OTHER•The Encyclopedia of Applied…•2025

Artificial languages are very useful for studying critical questions about second language learning and processing. Artificial language learning studies involve training a group of participants on a specific aspect of language, such as novel word sets or grammar structures, over minutes, hours, or days and this approach has a number of advantages. For example, participants can reach high levels of learning/proficiency in a short period of time an…

  • Hand-y scaffolding

Open Access•S Young, Sarah Grey et al.•ARTICLE•Gesture•2024•References: 4

Currently, it is unclear whether observing iconic gestures benefits comprehension of second language (L2) accented narratives, and whether it benefits it to a different degree than it does for first language (L1) accented narratives. In this study, L1 American English speakers watched videos of two narratives, one of which featured L1 accented American English, and the other of which featured L2 French-accented English. One narrative featured ico…

  • Variability in native and nonnative language

    Open Access•Sarah Grey•ARTICLE•Studies in Second Language…•2023

This study examined individual-level variability in N400 and P600 ERP correlates of native and nonnative language sentence processing of semantic and grammar information. Twenty-six native English-speaking learners of Spanish as a second language were tested. Participants completed sentence reading tasks in English and Spanish during EEG recording. The group-level results for grammar showed P600s in the native and nonnative language. For semantic…

  • Interdisciplinary Research at the Intersection of Call, NLP, and SLA

    Open Access•Nele Ziegler, Nicole Ziegler et al.•ARTICLE•Language Learning•2017•Cited by: 3•References: 47

Despite the promise of research conducted at the intersection of computer-assisted language learning (CALL), natural language processing, and second language acquisition, few studies have explored the potential benefits of using intelligent CALL systems to deepen our understanding of the process and products of second language (L2) learning. The strategic use of technology offers researchers novel methodological opportunities to examine how incre…

  • Class War

    Sarah Grey•ARTICLE•Socialism and Democracy•2016

It's a political truism that the easiest and most emotionally effective way to hammer home a point is to gesture to the children. Who, we’re asked, will think of the children?“The children” – speci

  • Effects of conditions on L2 development

Cristina Sanz, Sarah Grey•CHAPTER•Implicit and explicit learning of…•2015

Most research on the effects of implicit and explicit conditions, especially that which is pedagogically oriented, has been limited in terms of outcome measures. This stems from an over-reliance on accuracy data as the only dependent variable in measuring the differential effects of conditions. Accuracy data provide information on the static outcome, or product, of an input condition, but are unable to inform us about the dynamic processing profi…

  • Concurrent data elicitation procedures, processes, and the early stages of L2 learning

    Open Access•Ronald P Leow, Sarah Grey et al.•ARTICLE•Second language Research•2014•Cited by: 14•References: 1

Given the current methodological interest in eliciting direct data on the cognitive processes L2 learners employ as they interact with L2 data during the early stages of the learning process, this article takes a critical and comparative look at three concurrent data elicitation procedures currently employed in the SLA literature: Think aloud (TA) protocols, eye-tracking (ET), and reaction time (RT). The section on each data elicitation procedure…

  • Open Source Anti-Capitalism

    Sarah Grey•ARTICLE•Monthly Review•2009

Derek Wall, Babylon and Beyond: The Economics of Anti-Capitalist, Anti-Globalist and Radical Green Movements (London: Pluto Press, 2005), 236 pages, paperback, $26.95.For decades we've been told that "there is no alternative" to global capitalism—that trust in the market was the only way to bring progress and end poverty, despite the clear absence of an actual end to poverty. The global financial crisis of 2008 has undermined the rhetoric of inev…
