Pragmatic Variation in Greeting and Farewell Formulae in Rural Austria
Greeting and farewell formulae are highly conventionalized routines that index social relations, regional norms and situational formality. This paper investigates pragmatic variation in greetings and farewells in rural Austria, focusing on age, region, setting and prosodic design. We analyze greeting and farewell formulae and metalinguistic comments produced by 152 adults from 13 rural locations across two project phases. The dataset combines spo…
German Noun Plurals in Simultaneous Bilingual vs. Successive Bilingual vs. Monolingual Kindergarten Children: The Role of Linguistic and Extralinguistic Variables
(1) Background: The complex phenomenon of German noun plural inflection is investigated in three groups of German-speaking kindergarten children: (a) monolinguals (1L1), (b) simultaneous bilinguals (2L1) also acquiring Croatian, and (c) successive bilinguals (L2) acquiring Turkish as L1. Predictions of the usage-based schema model and of Natural Morphology concerning different linguistic variables are used to explore their impact on plural acquis…
Variation adnominaler Possessivkonstruktionen im Deutschen: Horizontal-areale und vertikal-soziale Analysen zum österreichischen Sprachraum. Horizontal-Areal and Vertical-Social Analyses in the Austri…
This paper investigates horizontal as well as vertical variation of adnominal possessive constructions in rural areas in Austria. The analyses are based on a corpus consisting of (more) “free” and (more) “controlled” data. As expected, intra- as well as extralinguistic parameters control the choice of construction variants. Among other factors, the nominal realisation of the possessor, the situational context and the region turn out to be decisiv…
Acquisition of reflexive and reflexively used pronouns in Croatian and Austrian German: A corpus-based study
Ma tuat net so vüü verniedlichen!“ – oder doch: Verweigerung und Hinzufügung von Diminutiven als Schnittstellenprobleme von mündlichen „Wenker“-Übersetzungsaufgaben. Refusal and Addition of Diminutive…
We investigate diminutive use in adults from rural regions of Austria based on oral translation tasks in two settings (dialect standard, standard dialect). Results show 1⁄3 of diminutive refusal despite diminutive stimuli and less than 10 % of diminutive addition without diminutive stimuli. A comparison with free conversations shows that mixed-method approaches are useful to investigate different aspects of the interface phenomenon of diminutive …
Prepositional phrases in German in Austria – identifying patterns of variation
German in Austria is claimed to be shaped by wide-spread dialect use and historical language contact. In this context, variation in prepositional phrases (PPs) is frequently cited, but still underresearched. Three linguistic variables are particularly interesting: (1) preposition choice (p-choice), (2) case marking in PPs and (3) preposition–determiner contractions. The present study aims at identifying linguistic and sociolinguistic – including …
Morphological Dynamics of German Adjective Gradation in Rural Regions of Austria
This study investigates the influence of different socio-demographic, regional and linguistic variables on autochthonous rural Austrian speakers’ productions of comparatives and superlatives in two experimental settings (aiming at standard versus nonstandard registers of individual speech repertoires). Effects of setting, of the distance from the city of Vienna as well as of various linguistic variables were found. Age group turned out to be the …
Competing norms of standard pronunciation. Phonetic analyses on the ‹-ig›-variation in Austria
This paper focuses on phonetic variation within the standard German language register of Austria. While the norm status and a high socio-symbolic value are attributed to certain lexical variants of standard language in Austria, the norm and usage status of characteristic phonetic properties remain unclear, due to lack of empirical analyses. By investigating the relation between standard language norms and “standard usage” ( Gebrauchsstandard ) in…
Vocabulary as a Central Link between Phonological Working Memory and Narrative Competence: Evidence from Monolingual and Bilingual Four-Year-Olds from Different Socioeconomic Backgrounds
Phonological working memory capacity, vocabulary size, and narrative competence are important skills in children’s L1 and L2 acquisition, which may vary as a function of their language background and socioeconomic status (SES). We investigated test data of 56 typically developing 4-year-old kindergarten children from two SES and two language backgrounds: 29 children (15 higher SES, 14 lower SES) were monolingual German-speaking, and 27 children (…

Prosody and animacy in the development of noun determiner use: A cross-linguistic approach
This study investigates prosodic (noun length) and lexical-semantic (animacy) influences on determiner use in the spontaneous speech of three children acquiring French, Austrian German and Dutch. In support of typological and language-specific hypotheses from the Germanic–Romance contrast, an advantage of monosyllabic nouns and of inanimate nouns for taking a determiner or filler was found in French, but not in Austrian German or Dutch. The autho…
The role of explicit contrast in adjective acquisition: A cross-linguistic longitudinal study of adjective production in spontaneous child speech and parental input
Experimental studies demonstrate that contrast helps toddlers to extend the meanings of novel adjectives. This study explores whether antonym co-occurrence in spontaneous speech also has an effect on adjective use by the child. The authors studied adjective production in longitudinal speech samples from 16 children (16–36 months) acquiring eight different languages. Adjectives in child speech and child-directed speech were coded as either unrelat…
Dynamic Adaptation in Child-Adult Language Interaction
When speaking to young children, adults adapt their language to that of the child. In this article, we suggest that this child-directed speech (CDS) is the result of a transactional process of dynamic adaptation between the child and the adult. The study compares developmental trajectories of three children to those of the CDS of their caregivers. Furthermore, a mathematical-conceptual model is built that captures the essential dynamics of adapta…
Acquisition of German diminutive formation and compounding in a comparative perspective: Evidence for typology and the role of frequency
Early phases of first language acquisition can shed light on general preferences in diminutive formation and compounding, as is demonstrated in this typological characterization of German diminutives and compounds and their acquisition. The role of typology is shown to be similar to that in acquisition of inflection in the parameters of morphological richness, productivity, and transparency, but different in other respects. The impact of frequenc…
Helping a crocodile to learn German plurals: Children's Online Judgment of Actual, Potential and Illegal Plural Forms
A comparative and dynamic approach to the development of determiner use in three children acquiring different languages
The study investigates the development of determiner use in three children acquiring French, Austrian German and Dutch, from the onset of language until age 3;0. Noun constructions (determiner omission, correct bare nouns, filler and determiner uses) in the children and in their inputs are analysed, providing evidence of similarities in developmental shape as well as differences in frequencies and timing. As expected, determiner use was delayed i…
On the role of morphological richness in the early development of noun and verb inflection
This study proposes a new methodology for determining the relationship between child-directed speech and child speech in early acquisition. It illustrates the use of this methodology in investigating the relationship between the morphological richness of child-directed speech and the speed of morphological development in child speech. Both variables are defined in terms of mean size of paradigm (MSP) and estimated in a set of longitudinal spontan…
The acquisition of number and case in Austrian German nouns
On the role of pragmatics in child-directed speech for the acquisition of verb morphology
Early noun plurals in German: Regularity, productivity or default
The acquisition of German plurals has been the focus of controversy in the last decade. In this paper we claim that degree of productivity (i.e. the capacity of nouns to form potential plurals) plays a key role in determining pace of acquisition. A plural elicitation task was administered to 84 Viennese German-speaking children aged 2;6 to 6;0. Analyses of correct responses showed that the highest scores were obtained with -e plurals, followed by…
