The interplay of structural ambiguity and reanalysis
This paper explores the relationship between ambiguity and reanalysis in syntactic change, with a particular focus on the interplay between structural and semantic ambiguity. The diachronic corpus study examines two cases of syntactic reanalysis. The first involves the development of the German directional adverb hinaus ‘out, outward’ into a verbal particle, while the second traces the evolution of the same adverb into an adposition, specifically…

Recent Changes in the Notion of Grammaticalization and the Rise of Alternative Concepts
This paper deals with the “modern” notion of grammaticalization as it has been developed in the 1980s. It is since the programmatic study by Christian Lehmann that the research on grammaticalization has received increasing interest and resulted in a large body of work. However, for the last two or three decades the interest in research on grammaticalization seems to be rather fading. Even more, the concept of grammaticalization is being gradually…
Verbo-Nominal Constructions with kommen ‘come’ in German
The paper presents the results of a diachronic study of the light verb constructions containing the German verb kommen ‘come’ accompanied by a prepositional phrase containing a deverbal noun and the preposition zu ‘to’. The analysis is based on the corpus data from the DTA ( DeutschesTextarchiv ) between 1600 and 1900. The aim of the paper is to integrate traditional grammatical descriptions of Funktionsverbgefüge with grammaticalization and lexi…
The role of atypical constellations in the grammaticalization of German and English passives
In this paper we propose an alternative scenario for the grammaticalization of passive constructions in German and English. According to the received view, the development starts with the frequent combinations of copula verbs with past participles, which then increasingly gain in frequency during the grammaticalization process. In contrast to the received view, we argue that marginal – i.e., atypical and infrequent – constellations of constructio…
Some notes on traditional Maratha jewelry
The history of Indian jewelry goes back to about five thousand years.During its history, India has been conquered numerous times. However, despite the foreign influence, Indian culture has not lost its identity. The Marathas are carriers of a unique subculture, located at the junction of the Aryan and Dravidian worlds. While the political and socio-economical history of Maharashtra is well studied, there is a considerable lack of research on the cul…
When secondary grammaticalization starts: A Look From the Constructional Perspective
On some Problematic Aspects of Subjectification
The aim of this paper is to clarify the notion of subjectivity and subjectification. It is proposed here that subjectification is a purely semantic change, similarly to the view presented in Boye and Harder (2012a). at is, in contrast to other diachronic processes that involve semantic and structural changes and of which subjectification may be a part, e.g., lexicalization, grammaticalization, and pragmaticalization, it does not necessarily corre…
Some remarks on the role of the reference point in the construal configuration of “more” and “less” grounding predications
In Cognitive Grammar, grounding predications are by definition highly grammaticalized elements. As grammaticalization is a gradient phenomenon, this chapter argues for a more gradual view on grounding. It is proposed that a particular linguistic unit may show a weaker or a stronger degree of grounding. The degree of grounding is closely connected with the degree of grammaticalization. Moreover, different degrees in grounding and grammaticalizatio…
The organization of the German clausal grounding system
This chapter examines the verbal categories of German in terms of grounding predications. Using the broad notion of deixis as a starting point for the examination, it first proposes a unified description of grounding predications as a particular class of deictic expressions. Second, it suggests that three general classification criteria – the nature of the grounded entity, the nature of the grounding relation, and the construal configuration of t…
Introduction. Evidentiality in European languages: The lexicalgrammatical distinction
Evidentiality in German: Linguistic Realization and Regularities in Grammaticalization
This book is a comprehensive study of the evidential system in German. It presents a systematic description of the encoding of evidentiality in present-day German, as well as a diachronic reconstruction of the relevant sources and paths of grammaticalization from the Old High German period onwards. Based on empirical corpus research, the study investigates the degree of grammaticalization of each single evidential construction and the make-up of …
Funktionale Grammatik: Konzepte und Theorien
Over recent decades, linguistic theory has gone through many decisive innovations and developments. A particular role in all these developments has been played by what are known as functional descriptions of language. This textbook presents a concise account of the most important theories in functional grammar from the last 40 years - functional grammar, systemic functional grammar, cognitive grammar, construction grammar, and grammaticalisation …
Linguistic Realization of Evidentiality in European Languages
The book offers the first collection of papers which explicitly deal with the linguistic realization of evidentiality in European languages. The contributions summarize relevant previous research and develop new perspectives on the view of evidentiality. The scope of the papers ranges from broad overviews on areal and typological issues to in-depth studies of evidential expressions in particular languages.
