Understanding multiple types of multiple grammars
The bear wants a small green apple and a big one
We investigate how 4-year-old children reconstruct the anaphoric pronoun unul ‘one’ when modified by Color or Size adjectives in Romanian, an understudied Noun-Adjective language. In a Truth Value Judgment Task, both adults and children accept unul ‘one’ to refer to apple or small apple in Ursuleţul vrea un măr verde mic şi unul galben ‘The bear wants a small green apple and a yellow one’. In Ursuleţul vrea un măr verde mic şi unul mare ‘The bear…
The Recursive Set-Subset Ordering Principle orders adjectives and relative clauses in visual context
We present evidence from two picture-matching experiments that native adult speakers of American English order and interpret sequences of nouns modified by adjectives/relative clauses containing adjectives in line with the Recursive Set-Subset Ordering Principle proposed in Bleotu & Roeper (2022a, b) and Bleotu, Foucault, & Roeper (2023). This principle ensures an automatic mapping of set-subset semantics to a recursive syntax in Universal Gramma…
Children are more sensitive to the Recursive Set-Subset Ordering than to Adjective Ordering Restrictions
The current paper investigates experimentally whether, in a context requiring identifying green leaves out of a set of long leaves, Romanian 4-year-olds and adults choose to place the Color adjective closer to the noun than the Size adjectives in accordance with a more rigid adjective ordering depending on the (type of) semantic property, or whether they choose to place the Set adjective closer to the noun than the Subset adjective, irrespective …
Relative gradable adjective recursion such as small small big mushrooms is more challenging for children than possessive recursion such as the deer’s friend’s sister’s mushrooms
Our experiment investigates whether children handle recursive possessives (R-Poss) in a more adult-like manner than recursive relative gradable adjectives (R-RGA). While the abstract notion of indirect recursion underlies both categories, we ask whether individual syntactic-semantic properties determine different acquisition paths in English for R-Poss and R-RGA at the 2-Level (the deer’s friend’s mushrooms, small big mushrooms) and at the 3-Leve…
Excluded entailments and the de se/de re partition
We show that some PRO-sentences (sentences containing an unpronounced subject in an infinitive clause) appear to receive de re interpretations when they occur in suitable discourse contexts or linguistic environments. This finding is surprising given the received view that such sentences are unambiguously de se [Morgan. 1970. “On the Criterion of Identity for Noun Phrase Deletion.” Papers from the Sixth Regional Meeting of the Chicago Linguistics…
Roll-Up is too complex for Romanian 5-year-olds
The current paper examines Romanian 5-year-olds’ comprehension and production of recursive structures involving multiple adjectives such as florile mici mari ‘flowers-the small big’, i.e., “the big small flowers”. On the basis of an experiment we conducted on 20 Romanian 5-year-olds, we show that children have the tendency to reduce recursion to coordination, the default interpretation at this stage of language acquisition. Moreover, children avo…
PP Coordination, Embedding and Feature Sharing
Este artigo apresenta e discute dois experimentos de correspondência entre frases e figuras em construções de Sintagmas Preposicionais em inglês e em português do Brasil para tentar avaliar a complexidade da representação em termos de estrutura, traços e operações gramaticais. Os resultados dos experimentos em que a coordenação de PPs (Direto Não Estruturado - DU, encaixe (Estrutura Indireta -IS) e compartilhamento de traços (Estruturação Direta …

Why minimal multiple rules provide a unique window into UG and L2
This article clarifies some ideas presented in this issue’s keynote article (Amaral and Roeper, this issue) and discusses several issues raised by the contributors’ comments on the nature of the Multiple Grammars (MG) theory. One of the key goals of the article is to unequivocally state that MG is not a parametric theory and that its current version follows very explicit minimalist assumptions. We also refine the notion of ‘minimal multiple rules…
Multiple Grammars and Second Language Representation
This paper presents an extension of the Multiple Grammars Theory (Roeper, 1999) to provide a formal mechanism that can serve as a generative-based alternative to current descriptive models of interlanguage. The theory extends historical work by Kroch and Taylor (1997), and has been taken into a computational direction by Yang (2003). The proposal is based on the idea that any human grammar readily accommodates sets of rules in sub-grammars that c…

Evidentials in Tibetan
We describe the nature of the evidential system in Tibetan and consider the challenges that any evidential system presents to language acquisition. We present data from Tibetan-speaking children that shed light on their understanding of the syntactic and semantic properties of evidentials, and their competence in the point-of-view shift required for the use of evidentials in questions. We then examine connections between the mastery of indirect e…

Chomsky’s Remarks and the Transformationalist Hypothesis
How not to undermine the goal of an acquisition theory
Much of Drozd's penetrating review of Investigations in Universal Grammar (IUG), beyond noting countless lamentable misattributions of ideas and inconsistencies, evaluates its methodology. The standardization of methodology in IUG can, I believe, undermine our understanding of acquisition more than it supports it. It is a pity if we lose the real value of their useful experimental refinements of existing experiments (and several novel ones in sem…
Abstract operators in early acquisition
We wish to argue in this paper that abstract operators block extraction fo children (as they do for adults), and that such operators are available in children's syntax already from about the age of three onwards. In particular, we will be concerned with abstract operators in purpose clauses and related constructions in the production data (for example, And the chicken gave it to Bozo to eat, Adam 3;4 file 28, see Appendix A) in a comprehension ex…
