Number maintenance in subject-verb agreement
In this paper, we investigate whether number is actively maintained as part of matrix subject-verb dependency establishment, and whether it is active enough to be used to resolve temporary number ambiguity of an interpolated noun. In a visual world paradigm, we tested whether number-ambiguous Basque nouns within embedded relative clauses can be disambiguated by the number of the matrix subject-verb dependency actively maintained over them. We man…
Assessment of the Sustainability of University Academic Programs for the Accreditation
The accreditation of university academic programs is a critical process in ensuring the quality and standards of higher education. A significant component of this process is the assignment of reference lecturers who make these academic programs sustainable. The problem of determining the appropriate faculty members to accredit university academic programs is a multifaceted challenge. The selection of reference lecturers for accreditation is influ…
Tools aiding decision-making for economic resources allocation in seismic retrofitting of residential buildings
A significant portion of the masonry and reinforced concrete buildings in Italy resides within regions of moderate to high seismic risk, rendering them especially susceptible to earthquakes. While urgent reinforcement measures are necessary, resources are limited, and retrofitting the entire existing building inventory is impractical. Therefore, optimizing resource allocation for reinforcement interventions becomes essential, considering cost con…
New data on text reading in English as a second language
This paper reports an expansion of the English as a second language (L2) component of the Multilingual Eye Movement Corpus (MECO L2), an international database of eye movements during text reading. While the previous Wave 1 of the MECO project (Kuperman et al., 2023) contained English as a L2 reading data from readers with 12 different first language (L1) backgrounds, the newly collected dataset adds eye-tracking data on English text reading from…
Development of a Vessel Scheduling Optimization Model to improve Maritime Transport sustainability
The social and economic development of the islands is generally dependent on the interconnection level with the mainland obtained through maritime transport services. When connecting many islands, the route planning is essential and typically a variety of constraints must be considered. Various optimization methods have been established to improve cost-efficiency but today environmental concerns, like the reduction of CO2 emissions, have become m…
Experimental Studies to Test a Predictive Indoor Radon Model
The accumulation of the radioactive gas radon in closed environments, such as dwellings, is the result of a quite complex set of processes related to the contribution of different sources. As it undergoes different physical mechanisms, all occurring at the same time, models describing the general dynamic turns out to be difficult to apply because of the dependence on many parameters not easy to measure or calculate. In this context, the authors d…
Cross-linguistic semantic preview benefit in Basque-Spanish bilingual readers
A Novel Strategy for the Assessment of Radon Risk Based on Indicators
Among the physical pollutants affecting indoor air, the radioactive gas radon may turn out to be the most hazardous. Health effects related to radon exposure have been investigated for several decades, providing major scientific evidence to conclude that chronic exposures can cause lung cancer. Additionally, an association with other diseases, such as leukemia and cancers of the extra-thoracic airways, has been advanced. The implementation of a s…
The Processing of Spanish Article–Noun Gender Agreement by Monolingual and Bilingual Toddlers
We assessed monolingual Spanish and bilingual Spanish-Basque toddlers’ sensitivity to gender agreement in correct vs. incorrect Spanish noun phrases (definite article + noun), using a spontaneous preference listening paradigm. Monolingual Spanish-learning toddlers exhibited a tendency to listen longer to the grammatically correct phrases (e.g., la casa; “the house”), as opposed to the incorrect ones (e.g., * el casa). This listening preference to…
Physiology of Language
What usage can do
Even when bilinguals learn both languages from birth and achieve high levels of proficiency, they rarely use their languages to the same degree. Recent findings suggest that individual differences in bilingual profile such as the usage of the bilingual’s different languages could affect the way they retrieve and analyse linguistic information, with greater use of linguistic mechanisms from the dominant language. One of the linguistic areas where …
On the person-number distinction
Anchoring Agreement in Comprehension
Most linguistic theories of language offer analysis of agreement describing the rules and constraints involved in the computation and interpretation of this dependency. A good testing ground for theoretical accounts of agreement is mismatching patterns. In this article we focus on a mismatch available in the Spanish agreement system - Unagreement - in which there is a person mismatch in the realization of plural subject-verb agreement. Unagreemen…
