  • Are we surprised yet: Expecting the unexpected in Asia-Pacific language variation

    Open Access•James N Stanford, James Stanford•ARTICLE•Asia-Pacific Language Variation•2026

The past year (2025) has marked the 10th anniversary of Asia-Pacific Language Variation (APLV), which started in 2015. This is a fitting time to examine how far we have come in the first ten years of APLV (2015–2024). In 2011, at the first NWAV Asia-Pacific conference, William Labov gave a plenary talk titled “Discovering the unexpected,” which was published in 2015 in the first issue of APLV . Labov discussed the ongoing expansion of variationis…

  • Introducing Bed Word: A new automated speech recognition tool for sociolinguistic interview transcription

Marcus Ma, Lelia Gla et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistics Vanguard•2024

We present Bed Word, a tool leveraging industrial automatic speech recognition (ASR) to transcribe sociophonetic data. While we find lower accuracy for minoritized English varieties, the resulting vowel measurements are overall very close to those derived from human-corrected gold data, so fully automated transcription may be suitable for some research purposes. For purposes requiring greater accuracy, we present a pipeline for human post-editing…

  • The rez accent knows no borders: Native American ethnic identity expressed through English prosody

    Open Access•Kalina Newmark, Nacole Walker et al.•ARTICLE•Language in Society•2016•Cited by: 10•References: 73

In many Native American and Canadian First Nations communities, indigenous languages are important for the linguistic construction of ethnic identity. But because many younger speakers have limited access to their heritage languages, English may have an even more important role in identity construction than Native languages do. Prior literature shows distinctive local English features in particular tribes. Our study builds on this knowledge but t…

  • A Randomized Controlled Trial Examining the Efficacy of Motivational Counseling with Observed Therapy for Antiretroviral Therapy Adherence

Open Access•Kathy Goggin, Mary M Gerkovich et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2013

This study determined whether motivational interviewing-based cognitive behavioral therapy (MI-CBT) adherence counseling combined with modified directly observed therapy (MI-CBT/mDOT) is more effective than MI-CBT counseling alone or standard care (SC) in increasing adherence over time. A three-armed randomized controlled 48-week trial with continuous electronic drug monitored adherence was conducted by randomly assigning 204 HIV-positive partici…

  • Continental Economic Integration: Modeling the Impact on Labor

    Open Access•James Stanford•ARTICLE•The Annals of the American…•1993•Cited by: 4•References: 2

Many labor representatives in the United States and Canada fear that a North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) will lead to a redirection of investment toward low-wage regions of the continent, consequently reducing wages and employment opportunities in higher-wage areas. These concerns seem to contradict several traditional conclusions of economic theory, and the results of quantitative economic models have suggested that a NAFTA could be be…
