Julien Landry, Carmen Malena•ARTICLE•Journal of Curriculum and Pedagogy•2025

This article outlines theoretical orientations, practices, and lessons from designing and implementing a multi-country learning program through participatory and democratic pedagogies. It traces how the Coady Institute at St. Francis Xavier University and Voice, an innovative grant-making facility, accompanied civil society practitioners across five African countries in strengthening the inclusion of traditionally marginalized groups in governanc…

  • Democratic pedagogies

Paul Emiljanowicz, Melissa Levin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Curriculum and Pedagogy•2025

In contexts of escalating political repression, democratic backsliding, and structural inequality, this special issue explores how democratic pedagogies can serve as tools for resistance, imagination, co-creation and transformation. Grounded in love, joy, and justice, the contributions challenge dominant educational norms that commodify knowledge and silence dissent, advancing instead pedagogies rooted in relationality, reciprocity, decoloniality…

Cet article compare quatre organismes cana…

  • Do Business-Backed Think Tanks Represent Class Interests? The Co-evolution of Policy Learning and Economic Elites in the Canadian Knowledge Regime

    Open Access•Julien Landry•ARTICLE•Administration & Society•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 49

Business-backed think tanks are often presented as representing the interests of economic elites. This article provides a more nuanced argument by using field theory to present the co-evolutionary dynamics between economic elites and other social forces. Three Canadian think tanks are examined to illustrate how different social forces can converge around business-backed think tanks, and how governance contexts and institutions shape these relatio…

  • Preparing for the United Nations Security Council

Open Access•Julien Landry, James Floch et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal Canada s…•2022

In the run up to Canada’s bid for a seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), Global Affairs Canada undertook thorough policy preparations to prepare for a potential term. Notwithstanding the unsuccessful vote on Canada’s candidacy, sharing our approach to policy design is worthwhile so that current and future policymakers can replicate these efforts and learn lessons from our experience. Indeed, transparency and openness are critical t…

  • Territorialities and Urbanities Transform

Open Access•Geneviève Vachon, Mathieu Avarello et al.•ARTICLE•Études/Inuit/Studies•2021•References: 20

This article focuses on the sustainable transformation of Nunavik's Northern Villages with regard to the notions of dwelling, urbanity and territoriality. Our participatory design research approach addressed the limits of current planning frameworks, exogenous development models, and a complex governance system by integrating the relationship to the territory and the impacts of climate change in the exploration of scenarios for alternative future…

  • Les sites d'intégration des think tanks canadiens depuis 1985

    Open Access•Julien Landry•ARTICLE•Bulletin d histoire politique•2020

  • Grounding the political spectrum

    Julien Landry•ARTICLE•Critical Policy Studies•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 22

Building on Bourdieu’s Field Theory and on Thomas Medvetz’s study of American think tanks, this article introduces the concept of modalities of integration to examine how a selection of three Canadian think tanks have emerged and endured to promote specific views. Results show that the political identities of these think tanks are mediated by the communities they maintain and the forms of power these represent. These findings suggest that it is t…

  • Disciplinary Practices As Social Manoeuvers

    Open Access•Julien Landry•ARTICLE•The Canadian Journal of Sociology•2015•References: 68

In his call for more public sociology, Michael Burawoy presents a generic framework to describe disciplinary structures in the social sciences. This model is based on a fourfold typology of knowledge which has been criticized by many. However, alternatives have fallen short of providing a convincing articulation of the social organisation and meaning of the intellectual practices the original typology was trying to describe. The debate on public …

  • Towards a theory of fragile state transitions

Open Access•David Carment, Julien Landry et al.•ARTICLE•Third World Quarterly•2015•References: 28

This article uses the Country Indicators for Foreign Policy (CIFP) fragile states framework to evaluate fragile state transitions. Our objective is to find out why some states considered fragile have recovered, while others remain fragile for long periods. We identify three categories of countries: those in a fragility trap, those that have exited it, and those that fluctuate between fragility and stability. CIFP data are used to examine state tr…
