  • Cross-Linguistic Influence between Aymara Evidentiality and Spanish Aspect in Bilingual Heritage Aymara-Spanish Children in the North of Chile

    Open Access•Jennifer Markovits Rojas•ARTICLE•Journal of Language Contact•2025•References: 7

The present study explored cross-linguistic influence ( CLI ) between Aymara evidentiality and Spanish aspect. Aymara is an indigenous language that grammatically marks the source of information, a feature known as evidentiality. Spanish aspect refers to how an action unfolds in time, such as whether it is completed or ongoing, and is marked by verbal morphemes. Aymara and Spanish are spoken in close proximity in northern Chile, leading to biling…

  • Dominance, Language Experience, and Increased Interaction Effects on the Development of Pragmatic Knowledge in Heritage Bilingual Children

Liliana Sánchez, M Goldin et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage Language Journal•2023

We investigate whether dominance, language experience, and increased interaction have an effect on the development of heritage bilingual children’s knowledge of the discourse-pragmatic constraints guiding null and overt subjects. A group of child heritage bilinguals ( n = 18, mean age = 5;5) and comparison groups of adults: Mexican Spanish monolinguals ( n = 15), heritage bilinguals in the United States ( n = 16), and English monolinguals in the …

  • Theory of Mind and Evidentiality Acquisition in Heritage Bilingual Aymara-Spanish Children in the North of Chile

    Jennifer Markovits Rojas•ARTICLE•Heritage Language Journal•2023

The present work examines the connection between language and conceptual development, investigating whether false-belief reasoning ( FBR ) and source-monitoring ability ( SMA ), abilities within the theory of mind (ToM) framework, trigger the comprehension of semantic and pragmatic knowledge (evidential scalar implicatures) encoded in the evidentiality structure (Papafragou et al., 2007). Furthermore, the present work examines whether age modulat…

  • Morphosyntactic Features Versus Morphophonological Features in L2 Gender Acquisition

    Open Access•Jennifer Markovits Rojas•ARTICLE•Languages•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 25

This paper aims to demonstrate the reliability of morphosyntactic versus morphophonological features in the acquisition of L2 gender of inanimate nouns across languages. Based on Anna Kibort study "Towards a typology of grammatical features"(2010), the current research proposes that the presence of a gendered determiner is more reliable than gendered noun-final morphemes in the process of adjective agreement within the Determiner Phrase (DP) acro…

  • Conceptually Cued Perceptual Categorization in Adult L2 Learners

    Open Access•Cristina Lozano‐argüelle, Laura Fernández‐arroyo et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Second Language…•2021

Previous studies attest that early bilinguals can modify their perceptual identification according to the fine-grained phonetic detail of the language they believe they are hearing. Following Gonzales et al. (2019), we replicate the double phonemic boundary effect in late learners (LBs) using conceptual-based cueing. We administered a forced choice identification task to 169 native English adult learners of Spanish in two sessions. In both sessio…
