Language Contact and Population Contact as Sources of Dialect Similarity
This paper creates a global similarity network between city-level dialects of English in order to determine whether external factors like the amount of population contact or language contact influence dialect similarity. While previous computational work has focused on external influences that contribute to phonological or lexical similarity, this paper focuses on grammatical variation as operationalized in computational construction grammar. Soc…
Perceptions of Healthcare-Associated Infection and Antibiotic Resistance among Physicians Treating Syrian Patients with War-Related Injuries
Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) constitute a major contributor to morbidity and mortality worldwide, with a greater burden on low- and middle-income countries. War-related injuries generally lead to large tissue defects, with a high risk of infection. The aim of this study was to explore how physicians in a middle-income country in an emergency setting perceive HAI and antibiotic resistance (ABR). Ten physicians at a Jordanian hospital su…
Global health impacts of policies: Lessons from the UK
BACKGROUND: The UK government committed to undertaking impact assessments of its policies on the health of populations in low and middle-income countries in its cross-government strategy "Health is Global". To facilitate this process, the Department of Health, in collaboration with the National Heart Forum, initiated a project to pilot the use of a global health impact assessment guidance framework and toolkit for policy-makers. This paper aims t…
Implementation and utilisation of community-based mortality surveillance: A case study from Chad
This model of community based mortality surveillance can be adapted and used by humanitarian agencies working in complex settings. Humanitarian organisations should however endeavour to disseminate routinely collected mortality data and improve utilisation of data for operational planning and evaluation. Accurate population estimation continues to be a challenge, limiting the accuracy of mortality estimates
Creating a Positive Future for a Minority Community: Transportation and Urban Renewal Politics in Miami
Overtown, once the center of African American life in Miami, lost 40% of its population when Interstate 95 was built through the heart of the community in the 1960s. Even though a variety of non-policy factors played a role in the decline of the area, expressway construction and urban renewal greatly accelerated the process. Just as important, efforts to mitigate the impact of the highway were delayed for many years, thus magnifying the negative …
Data Intermediation and Beyond: Issues for Web-Based PPGIS
This article explores the implications of moving public participation GIS (PPGIS) onto the World Wide Web. It discusses the potential benefits and impediments of using the Web for PPGIS application; it then uses a PPGIS project developed solely on the Web as a case study to illustrate various issues such projects may face. It finds that the cost-benefit calculus in this transition is ambivalent: whereas some costs decrease, other threshold costs …
